Newcastle west ham

If someone jumps in front of your car and you hit them would you be happy if the insurance company blamed you? Clever from Gordan (who would have thought it) but no penalty for me.

It's football.

It's the rules.

Nothing to do with the law, highway code etc.

I’m not a referee

This - from a referee
‘The only thing we need to Consider is: was the challenge careless (acts without precaution), reckless (acts with disregard to the danger or consequence for the opponent) or uses excessive force (excessive force or brutality when challenging for the ball endangering the safety of the opponent)’

The act was not (IMO) careless or reckless or excessive force

Quite a few playing the man not the ball here. Let’s be honest, we’d be fuming if someone did that to a Boro player and we didn’t get the penalty.

It’s not about “intent” I imagine most players who foul an opponent, particularly in the penalty area, don’t actually mean to.

Especially since it wasn't a challenge at all, he was just kicking the ball. Gordon challenged him and/or manufactured the situation 🙅

He didn't do anything to a Newcastle player.

Gordon did it to him and then went down like a sack of **** to ensure he could con the officials.

Agree, he hasn’t kicked the ball he’s kicked Gordon.
A direct free kick is awarded if a player commits any of the following offences against an opponent in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force:
  • kicks or attempts to kick
  • Careless is when a player shows a lack of attention or consideration when making a challenge or acts without precaution. No disciplinary sanction is needed
  • Reckless is when a player acts with disregard to the danger to, or consequences for, an opponent and must be cautioned
  • Using excessive force is when a player exceeds the necessary use of force and endangers the safety of an opponent and must be sent off
Phillips wasn't carded so it wasn't reckless.
He wasn't sent off, so he didn't use excessive force.
Which leaves careless. Gordon came in from behind and didn't play the ball, so Phillips can't be accused of a lack of either attention or consideration.

So according to VAR the ref made an error of judgement, with a high enough bar for a penalty, with regards to Phillips acting without precaution, mid-kick, to a player coming from his blind-side and not playing the ball. Which essentially means you can win a penalty by throwing yourself into a dangerous situation which is an indirect-free kick offence in and of itself:

An indirect free kick is awarded if a player:
  • plays in a dangerous manner
PLAYING IN A DANGEROUS MANNER

Playing in a dangerous manner is any action that, while trying to play the ball, threatens injury to someone (including the player themself) and includes preventing a nearby opponent from playing the ball for fear of injury.

Ludicrous decision.

Some would. Some wouldn’t. Some fans can be objective in their opinions.

For me, that’s a foul on Phillips. He’s in full control of the ball and is in the process of clearing. Gordon comes in from behind and prevents the clearance by putting his foot between the player and ball.

As mentioned above, had Phillips been taking a shot and an opponent did what Gordon did, Phillips would have got the foul.

Laws shouldn’t be interpreted differently based on where you are on the pitch.

We’d be loving it if it was giving for us and replacing “cheat” with “genius”.

The board would be in uproar if that wasn’t given and cost us a game.

Not much room for being “objective” when you support a football team. All part of the fun.

I wouldn't be loving it, cheating is cheating.

We've won plenty of penalties through dives, and I won't pretend I wasn't happy we've got them and scored, but I've never once thought to praise the player for cheating to win it or pretended that it wasn't what it was.

Forss against Blackpool last season springs to mind.
It should never have been a penalty, he dove and conned the referee.

We've also had plenty of dives not rewarded, and I've just been annoyed at the player for diving in the first place.

Ridiculous decision imo.
If I’d been watching that live, it would never even have crossed my mind that it might be a foul on Gordon.
