NFL trades

One thing I would say about the Browns front office - General Manager and Head Coach, they are very smart and intelligent people (not sure you could say the same about the owner) and won’t have taken the decision lightly. They are very thorough in everything they do. It wasn’t a spur of the moment decision.

Even if no crimes have been committed the fact he has visited at least 40 massage therapists suggests he has some character flaws at the very least.

Just read that article it still doesn't convince me that:
A. Watson is innocent, and
B. The Browns think he is innocent.

I think its purely a football decision which I'm sure will work in their favour on the pitch but its also a PR disaster off the pitch.

I'm sure the owner and GM will believe that they can ride out the controversy for a year and then everyone will be back talking about football, after which they'll end up with a great player.

If his crime is simply visiting brothels then I wouldn't care less as a fan but multiple sexual assaults is a completely different story.

I've watched a lot of the top QB's live in the London games, players like Brady, Brees, Rivers and Big Ben in their prime and Watson was probably the most impressive. He was running for his life play after play and still making big plays with his feet and arm.

He's got a top 10 arm, he can throw on the move and he's obviously great on his feet to escape pressure.

If he recover from a year out of the game and all the pressure that will come with the controversy I think the Browns will have a top 5 QB.

He was on a Texans team with some top talent, players like Hopkins and Fuller as receivers and a good defence on the other side of the ball but on the whole they weren't a great all round team.

At the Browns he'll have a good O line, a good running game and great receivers again. They are a better team than the Texans ever were, the only problem is they are in a tough division and an absolutely red hot AFC.

To make the playoffs in the AFC you'll need to be virtually superbowl calibre next season.
I forgot they had Hopkins, and don't even think I saw the Texan's at all last year.

Yeah the AFC is going to be difficult next year, for just about anyone.

You’re right Uwe, whatever the outcome the issue will always be brought up in future just as it’s always mentioned about other NFL players who have had allegations against them of a sexual assault nature (Rothlisberger etc)

This is Watson's last season with the Texans, he was absolutely brilliant and carried the team who were by far the worst in the NFL.

He's got all the tools to be one of the best in the NFL.

The other major outcome of the Watson draft for me is that the Browns have no first round picks for the next 3 years.

Had my day off booked so I could watch the first night of the draft which is one of my favourite nights of the year, now not as much interest. Im used to the Browns picking early and often.

Yeah we do look to have made a bit of a Faustian deal over this 👿

As people have said, plenty of NFL teams have players on their rosters with skeletons and the Browns are no strangers to this (Kareem Hunt anyone?). The difference with Watson is that:

a) He is smack in the middle of his controversy right now and there are no guarantee things won't take an even nastier turn.

b) As QB, he is the face of the franchise and sets the tone for the whole club. This is not a good spokesperson for Cleveland.

This isn't an offensive lineman who you don't notice half the time, he's literally the heartbeat of the team.

I've watched him play live and he's a brilliant player, he's literally making unbelievable plays every game. If the Browns won a superbowl you could pretty much guarantee that he'd be the league MVP.

The team have sold their soul for a superbowl chance its that simple. I'm a dolphins fan so I had a similar dilemma when Watson was linked last season.

If it was me I would just watch the rest of the league on redzone as a casual fan, I couldn't support him. When he leaves I'd come back and support the team again.

I suppose the counter argument to that is that most teams in the league have players with a checkered past and the fans don't stop supporting their teams, but something doesn't sit right with the thought of supporting Watson.
Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins. Chiefs lost a lot of WR talent this off season.

Will you be joining me on Redzone now?

The AFC looks like it'll be a lottery depending on who gets injured and scuppers their chances. Lots of teams who are looking strong.

Assuming Chiefs couldn’t afford Hill so have taken the pragmatic approach.

Dolphins have been improving for a couple of years, might make the division a bit more uncomfortable for the Bills.

Beasley didn’t contribute much last season so happy with him being released although does leave us a bit short.
Bills have signed crowder though

The Bills' passing game has been one of the most prolific in the NFL over the last two seasons. After parting ways with veteran receiver Cole Beasley late last week, Buffalo signed a younger option for the slot in Jets free agent Jamison Crowder.
Crowder, 28, has been a very productive slot receiver for the majority of his seven-year career. He has compiled six 50-catch seasons in his seven years as a pro, including each of the last three seasons with the New York Jets despite catching passes from a handful of different quarterbacks.

Only question mark for Miami on offence now is the QB. Tua doesn’t have a great arm.

But they have 2 first rounders next year so will be well positioned if they want to draft a QB (and the consensus is that next years QB class is much stronger than this years)

Not sure!

Like I said yesterday every team in the league has players with questionable backgrounds.

To be honest the better outcome would be Hill getting banned from the league rather than becoming the best paid receiver in the NFL.

I love the NFL but I hate the fact that players like Hill and Watson have a job when players like Kaeperknick are forced out for taking the knee.

I've watched every minute of every game that Tua has played and he's been nowhere near as bad as the American sports media have made out.

He hasn't got a cannon of an arm like someone like Josh Allen but his stats for when he does throw the deep ball are pretty good.

He played behind the worst O line in the NFL last season, he's had no running game for the last 2 years and had a limited group of receivers.

He's very accurate with the ball and although he's not a great athlete like Mahomes he has the potential to be a good QB. I watched a lot of Tua in college at Alabama and he was deadly with a group of fast, explosive receivers so there's no excuses now.

His problem is that he still makes the occasional awful throw and he hasn't played well in the cold weather games on the road. There's no guarantee that he's going to become a top quality NFL QB but considering he's only played about 20 games its far too early to right him off like a lot of the pundits did after about 6 games.

If he underperforms this season then the team have 2 first round draft picks next year.

They weren't willing to pay him enough, so he requested a trade. 5 picks for a guy that walks after 1 year (albeit 2 if they franchise tag him). Seems a decent deal.
Yeah I thought it would have been about wages/ salary cap, and see he's been offered a record deal (not for albums I hope  ). Didn't know players could walk though, or what happened if they did, or what franchise tags are, so you're clearly more clued up than me. A big 4 year deal might have been a risk on Hill, as he's 28 now and will start slowing down, which is critical to his game of course.

I know the picks matter, but it seems like so many of them don't turn out how expected, but that's understandable.

Lots of teams hoping they going to get some good first rounders, they're going to have to with what they're losing.
