Nickleback

Was at work today (here in Calgary) and someone brought up Nickleback and I piped up and said what a load of crap they are. To my surprise I was shot down instantly and was told I know nothing about music. I know nothing about music I grinned to myself. Canadians will defend anything that they think represents themselves as a nation but I was surprised about the reaction. Everone thinks they are great and they feel they are one of the best bands in the world. Really? I was basically ***** to everyone at work for the rest of the day.

I thought that I would write this post and ask what others think about them as as I said I personally think they are crap!!!!!

Strange, when I worked abroad (not Canada) all the Canadians there absolutely hated Nickelback. This was about 8-9 years ago.

Stick to your guns.... they are wrong.

I never get the hate that Nickleback get. They are far better than lot's of popular so called classic bands .......ie. Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Kiss, Saxon, Twisted Sister, Pearl Jam, Bon Jovi, Linkin Park, System of a Down, Journey, Foreigner, Rage Against the Machine........erc. etc..... and everything GnR have done since Appetite. All utter **** gravy.

Some of the bands in that list are pretty bad 🙉

Was at an all day concert in Glasgow at an REM gig, right at the end of their time.

The artist list in order was some local band, followed by the Zutons then Nickleback, then REM.

Michale Stipe walked on stage and said “How the f*** do we follow the Zutons!!”

The Zutons did blow everyone away, Stickleback struggled to follow them and Stipe to his credit was right. He never mentioned the Canadians.

Rage Against the Machine are incredible.

I'm a lover of all things Canadian, have travelled coast to coast on Via Rail and indeed had planned to move and live there. Sadly that all came to nought, but there you go!

Anyway point being as much as I love Canada, their bands are generally pretty bad and this was even acknowledged by an Act of Parliament stating a set percentage of artists played on Canadian radio, must be Canadian. ( Comcan. Not sure that still applies, over to snowman on that!) While this is very noble, it does bring about the notion that no matter how pants your band is, you have an advantage when it comes to airplay, and it shows! Probably the dullest gig I ever went to was Barenaked Ladies at the Saskatoon Arena, the best I can describe it as is 2 hours of a band that would never play anywhere bigger than a Sixth Form Common Room over here! That said, the way the locals reacted, you'd think the Beatles had reformed and John wasn't dead after all and they all loved it, so fair play to them!

Nickelback better than Pearl Jam?
Have a word with yourself man!
I've nothing against Nickelback btw.
To me like GnR, first album (y) then.................nah.... I'm out. But then I was never big on grunge.

There are loads more as well who are worse and yet Nickleback seem to be everyone's target. It's like its just a popular bandwagon to get on board.
"Ooo I'm so cool because I hate Nickleback as well"

I have to say they're far from my favourites, and certainly not a hill to die on , but no where near as bad as some make out.
I actually went to see them a few years back. A bit of an after thought and mainly to take my daughter and her boyfriend who had tickets. They were very good, as were the support, Black Stone Cherry.

What's not to like

I'm guilty of picking on Nickelback because they're a popular target 😁
They are mediocre mind, formulated rock. There are much worse bands about. Motley Crue the worst on your list.

Someone into Nickleback told the OP he knows nothing about music?? Good. F***ing. Grief :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

They are among the worst bands I have ever heard. About as unique and creative as a brick. Like a rock band if they came for free on the back of a pack of cornflakes.

Nickleback better than Pearl Jam as well?!? I have heard enough today already.

First of all at no point did I say to the OP that "he knows nothing about music??" ............ so try reading the thread before commenting :p

Secondly at no point did I say that I was into Nickleback, in fact I said "I have to say they're far from my favourites, and certainly not a hill to die on" ............ so try reading the thread before commenting. :p

I would say that Nickleback are no more or less creative or formulaic than most rock bands. That is just old oft rolled out cliche. However I get how they may be viewed as mediocre. It's probably where I'd put them, a bit meh. but when I saw them live they were excellent and certainly not deserving of the hate they attract.

As for Pearl Jam, yeh I knew that would get some bites. tbh I'm just not into "Les Miserables" music. No wonder Cobain blew his brains out.

Even Flow, Jeremy, Alive ....... they're the same song. Listen to them back to back and see if you can spot the join.

Okay, I know it's moot discussion as people like what they like so no point arguing about who is better/worse than who. So I'll just leave you with this pile of steaming dog poo from Pearl Jam. Get your lighters out and enjoy

Jesus Christ. Pipe down ffs!! I did not say that YOU said the OP knows nothing about music. The OP states that he had a conversation in which he told someone who was a fan of Nickleback that he thought they were sh1te. Then he was told back that he knows nothing about music, which struck me as hilarious. It doesn't even need an explanation.

I understand the structure or formula of songs, I am a musician who's been around the block studying/performing, and did a guitar degree at a school in London many moons ago. ;) 😁

We will just have to agree to disagree on Nickleback I'm afraid, no big deal :ROFLMAO: .... but musically, lyrically they are an extremely limited band compared to Pearl Jam. Pearl Jam wrote a lot more songs after their Ten album!! Songs like Even Flow, Alive were decent hits but the band evolved sound-wise from those tracks quite quickly. 😜 I'd say Eddie Vedder, Stone Gossard, Mick McCready, Jeff Ament and Matt Cameron each have more soul and creativity in their little fingernail than the mighty Nickleback do. Albums like Vs, No Code, Vitalogy and Binaural were brilliant, though Ten is still a decent album .. even to this day it still sounds good.

You obviously think very highly of your own 'music knowledge'.
You have an opinion, same as anyone else. Although yours seems to be a quite confrontational opinion.
