My in-laws are from Scunthorpe so I have adopted them as a second team. I try to get down to Glanford whenever I can but they were certainly a tough watch last season, but I think to understand their demise you need to understand the back-story behind the previous chairman, Peter Swann. Basically, a Wish Mike Ashley. Robbed the club blind and never invested a penny back into it.
Swann sold players at base-level prices to generate income for his personal gains, players who are now prolific throughout the football league. Luckily, a new owner came in towards the end of last year and despite a brief glimmer of hope that they could avoid relegation, it was inevitable given the quality of players that were brought in under the previous regime. Seems that they have bought well this year and have got off to a great start. The new management have really pushed the local pride agenda and got local businesses', tradesman, grass root clubs back involved with the club to generate some form of finance. Unbelievably, the clubs fan base actually chipped in for a new scoreboard however Swann refused to pay the contractor fees to have it installed, so it sat dormant for months. As with the likes of Bury, Rochdale etc, poor management really slides under the radar at that level and fat cat local businessmen just take whatever they feel necessary.
Definitely looking forward to a few "local" away days for them this year.
