Just looking at Wiki and the attendance didn't seem right - can anyone confirm that there was such a difference between each game, i.e. 23k, 14k, 18k.

I have read the attendance at AP was really frowned upon . We only got it last minute because Newcastle goofed up their preparation because of a lease dispute with the council

The England 66 world Cup tournament holds the 'record' for the lowest average attendance per game across whole competition.

This always seems weird when you think about what the scramble for tickets would be like now (ignoring covid)
I'd like to see the working out for that. For example, two of the groups in 1962 failed to attract a single five-figure attendance and one of the semi-finals was seen by less than 6000 spectators.

Apologies - it was something I read, but turns out it is garbage.

North Korea 3 USSR 0 Attendance - 22,568
North Keorea 1 Chile 1 Attendance - 15,887, Such was the emotional Ayresome Park crowd many of the North Koreans left the field in tears
North Korea 1 Ital y 0 Attendance - 18,727

I attended those three games and would say that at the time the tickets seemed expensive. Also, we never got to see the USSR v Italy, USSR v Chile or Chile v Italy which most people assumed before the tournament started would be the most attractive fixtures to attend, especially as North Korea were a completely "unknown quantity". That may well have had a bearing on ticket sales at the Boro.

Seems strange that North Korea played all of their group games at one venue. where as higher seeded teams all played at 2 different grounds.

Was this so that we could keep a better watch on them so as to stop them spying?

Whilst we are talking 1966 at AP which lead to the building of the 'bob end' stand. I also recall the size of the pitch was made bigger and why the kop end goal had to be 'squeezed' further back. Does anyone else have a similar recollection?

I went to all the games. You could get tickets for all 3 at a reduced rate but I can remember my uncle saying they cost a lot of money if you paid match to match compared to a Boro game.
I had the match tickets and a poster advertising the game but they went missing when we moved house in the 70s 😣

I am sure the fact we had North Korea for all 3 games had a marked effect. No history or pedigree whereas Russia, Italy and Chile did. I went with my dad to all 3 - first time I recall chanting! Korea, Korea!!!

Yes this. The first thing I heard immediately after the draw was people moaning that we'd got all North Korea's games!

The state may have asked them to restrict their travel around the region? Just speculating. Always thought England had an advantage in playing all their games at one ground. Appreciate because of crowd size but even so....

I went to two games with my dad and uncle, they rarely watched football.

First game was the USSR game and we were close to the tunnel, the difference in the stature of the players was my first impression of what was a one sided game. I remember the agility of the Korean keeper too.

For our second game, the Italy match, we were in the north stand upper, the number of Italians around us with small flags is a stand out memory and the joy of my dad and uncle at the end of the game.

We paid on the gate, I remember it being a quid and my old fella scattering a tout who was trying to get rid of tickets at 10/- just outside the turnstile, which confused me at the time.

There were plenty of empty seats for both games, the touts hopefully being well and truly stung.

England weren't supposed to be playing all of their games at one venue, the switch from Goodison Park for the semi final was made after England's qualification.

Thats correct, the pitch was OK for domestic football but for internationals it was a yard too short, so it was lengthened at the Holgate end. It was left like that, and that's why the goal at that end had a net that was squashed up.
