Not On The Buses

Before the Boro v Watford game I bumped into a Boro friend Mick standing outside the Riverside. I asked how his season had been. “Terrible,” he replied and what followed was a catalogue of public transport nightmares that had stood in the path of this fellow veteran home and away regular. I then wondered whether this was something others have experienced this season. On this weekend when Boro is one of 80 clubs taking part in a Green Football Weekend could lack of public transport be hammering a big spoke in the wheel of all the eco friendly efforts?

Can't speak for buses. However the trains are awful. Most people travelling to the Riverside would be likely reliant on Transpennine or Northern Rail and both are very fond of cancellations

Was recently in London, hadn't not been prop,rather than football for years. Could not believe the transport infrastructure there, massive new rail lines and connections, buses running frequently and all night, obviously existing tube, overhead national and dlr rail. There was a days strike also when I was there, punters really belittling the striker's. I said you should try pubic transport up here. You cant get a train between cities after early evening, my son's bus to college seems to be cancelled more than it runs, more expensive to get a bus from Middlesbrough to stockton than Hyde Park to tower bridge. They really don't get how bad everywhere else is
 
A poor public transport helps the energy companies.

Not having decent public transport makes life increasingly difficult for a large section of the population.

It's easy to see which choice this country has taken.

If we're talking green policies did you see the development taking place at Crewe, covering the stadium car park in shelters with solar panelling, they have similar at the RSPB car park at Saltholme.

 
you need to get this idea out of your head that private train and bus company's with shareholders have any interest what-so-ever in providing a mode of transport to the benefit of 'the public'.

they run them and organise them to make a profit - they are not providers of public transport anymore than Harrods is a corner shop.

the environment & social dreams of an integrated transport system is as far away now as it has ever been.
 
The Green Football Weekend was an absolute dead loss as far as I could see. The first I knew about it was when I read a small piece in a newspaper which mentioned that Boro were doing something. Then there was something in the programme but you had to look hard to find it. I didn't see, or hear, anything else about it.

Oh that is interesting - as you say just like at Saltholme.

No chance of getting to the ground in a green sustainable way. If you’re lucky enough to live on a direct train route they are unreliable, dirty, overcrowded and generally full of idiots on match days. Same issues with the bus

Well that's a sweeping generalisation as well. I literally had a clean carriage to myself from York to Middlesbrough on Saturday.
 
So of course, having ranted to you about public transport, I ended up having a perfect trip both ways on Saturday and felt like a total fraud!

You can, when they run. There’s supposed to be trains to Manchester and (via Darlo) to Newcastle after 10 and York after 11. Supposed to be. It’s reliability that’s more the issue.

They don’t know they’re born with their bus service true enough but that’s a bad example. It’s further to get a bus from Middlesbrough to stockton than Hyde Park to tower bridge as well.

Fairly standard down here I have to say - many shopping centres, large stores and the like have car parks covered in solar panels ...... and before anybody makes a sarcy point about Southern Spain and sunshine, you don't actually need direct sunlight now for the latest panels, just daylight
 
Either car share [diesel] to get to an from Boro in under 3 hours including night matches.
Can only get coach [diesel] to Boro if staying overnight and travel back next day - no coach home Saturday or night matches after 3:15pm
Train now costs £94:40 off-peak return. [Anytime is £163]
LNER trains will be severely restricted by major engineering works in coming months, so option of under 3 hours = X
Average journey time 3hrs 52 mins - including up to 4 changes. Trans Pennine cancel trains or terminate short of advertised destination without notice. Therefore, split ticket or Advanced Tickets [including Transballs-up] arent always valid and have to pay the extra to go from York to Boro via Darlington.
I`de love to cycle it, but the distance and the route means it would take two days and an overnight stop [wild-camping?!].
Our public transport infrastructure is schitt!,
Trains are mainly 30+ years old, dirty, unreliable, filthy diesels,over-priced, over-crowded [especially Cross-Country] under-invested, in favour of roads, and a disgrace.

ps: That covered bike hut at the back of the East Stand is a start - but an angle - grinder can get through any of the tiny poles and I couldnt see any cctv focused on it on Saturday?
