OLD MIDDLESBROUGH BUS QUIZ QUESTION

Blast from the past.

Thanks for posting. That brought back memories.

Spent a lot of my time as a kid in the 1960's at my grandmother's, who lived on Normanby Road. The trolley buses (my grandmother called them "tracklesses") went past her front door.

The long rods that connected to the overhead cables must have been susceptible to catching fire, as I remember it happening on more than one occasion.

I played for a darts team in the centre of Middlesbrough and we had a number of bus conductors in the side who were based at the Royal Exchange bus terminus, just about 100 yards from the pub. These buses were very convenient for our away games.
I remember the 11 Link bus too.

A mate of mine had a band called The Subterraneans and they sang a song about a bus called “The 5”. Was a Sunderland bus I think. According to the song it’s a good bus. Doesn’t answer this question though.

Whilst on the bus journey theme, i believe ‘in my life’ by the Beatles was written on and about a bus journey through the city of Liverpool.

From memory, the 1 bus used to go from the town to Thornaby via the Coronation, and the 11 from the town via the Coronation to Stockton.

‘L’ was the ’Link‘ bus. Bottom of Cranmore Rd, Cargo Fleet Lane, past Stewart Park, Acklam Rd to Blind School.
’Y’ was Thorntree/Netherfields, later the 17. The last bus from town was 10.55 ish from outside of Debenhams. Like a nightclub !! Quite often stopped outside of Doggy Police Station ‘cos driver was that fed up of the chaos.
’G’ not sure but was this bus from outside The Greenway pub to Roseworth?Later became the ‘36’.
’M’. Guessing a bit ….. Lodore Grove to Transporter? Or was that ‘K’?
’N’ def Berwick Hills.

In the 60's and early 70's the 11 travelled between Middlesbrough and Billingham, the number then changed to 41/42 depending on the route.

Z was from town hall to park end along Linthorpe Road, The Avenue, past the Palladium shops to Bell Vue. Along Marton Road to Easterside, Broadwell road onto Ladgate Lane then Overdale road on Park End. Turned onto Penrith road where everybody had to get off the bus while the letter was changed from a Z to a U. Passenger's were then allowed back on the bus and had to pay their fare again as it was now a new service. It went down Ormesby road, past Doggy market, along North Ormesby road, along Corporation road to the Empire where it changed back into the Z. The U bus did the reverse journey and I think that started outside Hamilton's record shop.
