I was at that game. I think it was the last time I was drunk at a football match. For some reason I spent most of the afternoon in the pub that was on the ground floor of the building I worked in. Then I hopped on a 442 at Waterloo, and it was in the days when 442s had a lounge bar so I drank all the way down. When I got to Portsmouth I found I hadn't enough money for further drinking so went in search of a cash machine. Fortunately I couldn't find one so I headed to Fratton Park. I arrived just as the Boro team coach got there. I remember not recognising anyone on the 'bus, partly because there were some reserve players on it, and partly because I was ***ed.

Middlesbrough have signed former Arsenal academy defender Christian Burgess on a two-year deal.

Burgess, 20, who had trials with West Ham & Tottenham, was studying history at Birmingham University last season after a spell at Bishop's Stortford.
