Paddy McNair goodbye message.

Great player for the club. Deserves his move and we have enough cover. Well done and thanks for everything Paddy.

Good luck to Paddy. He was a good player for Boro and has earned the right to make his own decision. Hopefully his next move is a good one too.

The implication in most articles is that we did not offer any kind of contract. Is this because we might have verbally said we would like you to stay but its gonna be a hefty cut and he has said dont bother offering, or as literal as it is being made out, we just had no need for him at all ?

It could be.

Or it could be down to the fact he doesn't seem to be a first choice player under Carrick and he wants first team football. Which would also be a quick conversation.

Or we might just not see him as someone we need in the squad anymore so told him outright that he wouldn't be offered a contract. We've got 4 other CBs under contract. He's never played in the midfield under Carrick. He's never been used at RB I don't think? We played VDB at RB in front of him IIRC.

I think it's one of those where his wage is so high - that it could be deemed as disrespectful for us to offer a contract that would be SO much lower.

It's reported that he's on £25k/week - might not be true - but if it is, we'd have been wanting him to take a 50% pay cut - which would be very unlikely.

He'll end up going somewhere who can afford 18-20k.... Rangers / Sheff Utd / maybe MLS

He will be probably getting a decent signing on fee and wages where ever he lands. He`s only coming up 30, a NI regular and will end up coaching and managing them at some point, I bet.
He was OK for the Boro, never impressed me in MF but could play CH pretty well in this division, could get murdered on the deck at times but so do most these days.

I suspect that this sort of thing is handle with an informal call to the agent ask what kind of salary the player is expecting.

If the difference is so great that there's no realistic prospect of negotiating a contract that works for both sides, it's time to shake hands and wish each other well without wasting time and effort.

A 5th choice CB (which is what he would be Rav/Clarke/Lenihan/Fry) is only worth 2-4K for us. So yes, I think we didn’t offer a contract as that 85% drop would be deemed as insulting
