Paddy McNair out of contract this Summer

I'd keep him, perhaps on reduced terms if his 30k a week is true.

He is a utility player and does OK at the back and as a defensive midfielder. I don't know what he is like around the dressing room, but you need some old heads in what is a very young side.

Luton Town were linked with him in the Summer and we've been linked with numerous central defenders.

Charlie Creswell - Leeds - doesn't seem well suited at Leeds, similar headed clearances statwise to Lenihan

Nathaniel Adjei - Hammarby - linked early Leeds interested, now they are not interested.. most likely name mentioned imo

Joe Worrall - Forest - looked like it was all go at one point.. now looks like he's staying put.

Scott McKenna - Forest - Celtic leading the chase.. looks similar to Paddy McNair

Eiran Cashin - Derby - runoured to be joining Sheffield United at one point.. big player at Derby.. most likely will stay

Ronnie Edwards - Peterborough - West Ham and Everton have had £4m bids turned down.. looks likely to go for £4,5m

Norwich City have landed irish wonderkid Sam Curtis £3m with £1m upfront.. highly rated with some big teams in for him.

that won't happen. He has a role to play still for us based on the number of games left. our bench is kids at present. Carrick would prefer him there to a kid.
Contracts expire end of June. Rumoured to be on 30k a week. We keep him we are effectively spending 600k for a 4th choice CB. Carrick would prefer to keep him, but can't see that happening.

I imagine someone will take him for a nominal fee and we will be happy to free up the wages.

I'm throwing the challenge flag on that. I've only looked at league matches this season and last, and I've not considered starts and sub appearences.

However:

This season the team has lost 44.4 of its matches, but 46.6% when Paddy has played
Lasts season we lost 32% of matches, but 40% when Paddy played.

I'd not stretch those stats to proving we lose more when he plays, but it certainly doesn't prove we lose less.

I'm struggling to find the stats for last season but this season when played as a Centre Back we've won 8 out of the 10 games when he's started (I've not included the game against Leeds when he went off after half an hour).
I'd be amazed if any of our other CBs have a better record than that.
Bear with me I'll find the ones for last season because I know I looked before and his PPG was remarkable.

I really dislike these stats because it's attributing too much to a specific player. There is such a thing as correlation. If we are going through a good or bad spell when a player is in the team it isn't solely down to that player's inclusion/absence. There are far too many variables week to week just looking at our own 11 never mind the opposition and teams go on good/bad runs all the time.

There are definitely some players where this would be true because it really changes the way we play like Hackney or if we could swap Crooks for Akpom or Greenwood for Mbappe but I don't think McNair changes the way we play significantly.

Our young un defended Fry by saying when him and McNair played together we won more!

I've only looked at losses, as per JVMB's initial theory.

I looked at Fry too: we lost 44% when he played this season (we've lost 46.6% of league matches), and 26% when he played last (compared to 32.6% of all LMs).

I'm not making claims based on these: I think you'd need to have a massive difference to claim any causal link for 1 player in a complex system. I'm just interested to see what the difference was.

Actually says 20k a week, but that site says Howson is on 25k, while he was initially it was clearly stated he took a huge pay cut from that when Warnock was here. So the site is abit cr6p.

The site gives a good ball-park figure for each player, but McNair has a green tick next to his name which means the salary has been verified at 20k.

Re Howson, I've never heard mention that he took a big pay cut under Warnock. Can you provide a link?

I'm not claiming that McNair is absolutely vital to our success when we win with him in the team, but the fact we have been more successful with him in the team as a CB both this and last season, shows he's not the liability that some people make out.

Hes a middling championship defender but if hes anything near 30k per week it represents terrible value for money . Hes a good pro so i wish him well when he goes

He's a victim of being a jack of all trades and master of none for us.

Can't knock him he's been a good player for us and stepped into Midfield, Right back and Centre back when needed and adapted to all roles he's been asked to.

The problem is that this has stopped him from developing into a position that he can make his own. I'm sure he see himself as midfielder ideally, but mainly now seen as a centre back option here and therefore not 1st choice.

If and when he does move on, wish him all the best and thank him for always stepping in when needed.

I'm not sure people criticise him that much, certainly not unfairly. He's fairly dependable but he does make mistakes and gets caught out of position (and he's very slow) but he's a championship player so it's not out of the ordinary. It's the fact that he's paid as a top end player to be an average player that is his issue. The fact we signed him as a midfielder probably influences people's thinking when they see him make a mistake because they assume a natural defender wouldn't make that mistake. For me he is just very easily replaceable and we can put the money to better use.

I disagree with that and felt we missed him when he got injured.

We look better now because we have players playing in their right positions and Ayling gives us a balance to the team. We always knew McNair was a stop gap at the back but I would also add, that many on here wanted to see him replace Fry.
We've definitely improved defensively recently, though I'm not sure you should include Ayling as one of the reasons. Yet.

However I do agree that it seems he will hopefully give us the balance we have missed since Smith has been out. And the leadership qualities 🤞

Unless McNair was given a specific man marking job to do, he always gave me the impression he was a bit confused by the playing out from the back business.
Can't fault his service to the club though, and at times we have been lucky to have his flexibility to call upon.
Good luck to him 👍

Paddy’s been a very good servant to the club and has suffered dogs abuse, I wish him the best should he leave.
Not really dogs of abuse is it people have commented on his performances. Some people don't rate him and criticise his performances.

Quite similar to you with Jones or is that dogs abuse too?

Hes a decent back up and been a good servant just not worth 30k a week.

Can’t remember him getting dogs abuse. People have been critical at times and rightly so. Don’t think anyone was criticical this season or second half of last season. He’s been good consistently since then. Shame about his injury a few weeks ago but do think now could be time to cash in. Be a shame him for to go for nothing.

I’ve never given Jones any abuse, I’ve been critical though.

McNair has been given abuse in the past.

I'd like to keep him. Yet clearly he is on a wage structure that we have thankfully departed from.

He gets a lot of unjustified pelters on here. I'm not sure why as often for playing out of position. Also been one of that time of crazy spending who we've had our moneys worth out of (also see Howson).

The deal is probably a none starter. It will have been for the past year to 18 months. We would have extended by now. I mean as a player you'd keep him. I imagine 95% of champo clubs fans would see him as a good edition.

So I wish him well. He's been a very good signing over a period of years. I guess it could make sense to cut his deal short this month if he's got a decent move in the pipeline. If not then we will no doubt benifit from having him over his last 6 months.

We are looking a bit better at CB with Clark being fit and looking impressive. Rav has been exceptional. Also Ayling has featured for Leeds as a CB.

Any fee this month would be a bonus. Yet even saving 6 months of 30k could go towards loaning a prem CF. Many prem teenagers are on that 😂

I don't see the sense on retaining paddy since the club has Clarke, Fry and rav with lenihan to come back. Shame that we spent five million on him and he will be leaving for nowt though. Part of our parachute payments madness I suppose.

Thats what I said. A nominal fee he will go but they won't let him leave for free and pay him up in Jan.
