Passing out from the back

For 'good enough' I'd read 'well practiced enough'. We've definitely got the players to do it.

I don't think it's simply practice.

Swansea and Bournemouth were clearly very practiced in doing it, but still caused themselves plenty of problems

I think it's about doing it judiciously and not insisting on doing it on every occasion. Playing out from the back is more effective for hitting a few long balls too.

It's not just possession, it's with purpose and that is the difference between us and say swansea.

I really like the philosophy, and the shoots are there to see. We went from having less than 50% possession with these players and running out of legs because of all the defending, to being more than 50% in nearly every game (bar swansea, but that didn't tire us because they play it across the back without purpose too much) and still having the energy to keep at it through 90 mins.

A lot of teams will pass it from one side to another at the back just to retain possession. We tend to make a couple of lateral passes at most and either pass it into a midfielder or step out to draw the opposition onto us and then look for a triangle.
Two words that sum us up under Wilder, purpose and imposing.

I was replying to the suggestion that we didn't have the talent across the back to play out, which is simply not true.

Today seemed a bit of a watershed for me, we played out more than I've ever seen a boro side do it, but you're right, occasionally it's not possible and we got the balance spot on today

I noticed Forest tried to prevent McNair coming out with the ball today, first half they let Fry have it -- 49 passes at 92% Second half they tried to force Dijksteel onto the ball and block Fry, Dijksteel 36 passes at 97%. That worked well :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

Forest, apart from that 10-15 minutes spell in the second half, didn't have a clue how to stop us playing just as we wanted to. We were on the front foot in much the same way as you see the likes of Liverpool, City, Chelsea etc play and we basically laid it out to Forest that we are going to keep coming at you and it's up to you to try and prevent it. For the most part, Cooper had no answers.

It will be interesting to see how lumley evolves under wilder but we obviously need an upgrade

we had spent along time watching our players struggle to put a few passes together even under Warnock so any good practice that helps encourage players to pass the ball well is a yes from me
