Passing out from the back

What do people think about us starting to do this? I thought against Bournemouth we had some really dicey moments - not really sure we have the players to do it. Then again it seems to be the modern way to play and when done well it can lead to good positions. Just not sure my nerves can take us doing it Boxing day!

When we had the likes of Gibson, Ayala, Randolph etc I wouldn't feel so anxious but Lumley does not fill me with any confidence. Against Bournemouth we nearly came unstuck and need to polish this up. Hopefully practice makes perfect.

Yeh, the hoof rarely works and often just gives possession right back but we could easily come unstuck at the back as nearly happened via Howson's attempt

I've never been a massive fan of it but its growing on me. I think we'll look back in 20 years and think, why did we do that?

That said, I think we will be good at it as the players do it more. Paddy, Dael and dijksteel all comfortable with and carry the ball well.

With regards to our fan base I think a lot will never be pleased. Moan no matter how we play. I couldn't believe a few round me in the south who were booing last game

I prefer it to the hoof up the field and loss of possession. I have noticed the tactic of both full backs standing level with the keeper at goal kicks now. I cant see that as anything other than a bit of professional time wasting tactic. Enomoyed by a numer of premier league sides.

We have seen this with karanka and mowbray. its all good so long as we go through the transitions but we always ended with us tap around the midfield and achieving nothing.

It has to be learned. With long clearances we seem to lose possession more than 50% of the time, and when we do retain the ball it is seldom in a good situation.

There were groans round me not boos and I could undersatand it as we looked shakey
Exactly, I think people are quite happy with the new plan but you can't expect fans to suppress shouts, gasps and groans when we have dodgy moments. It's all part of the 'fun'. Dijksteel was an accident waiting to happen in that first half against Bournemouth, major credit to the lad he turned it round in the second half. What I like about CW's version of playing out is that it is direct and not possession for possessions sake.

It seems to be a very common occurrence at all levels of the game now. I suppose some teams will be more successful at it than others. Let's hope we fall into the latter group.

I think there's variations on the scale when it comes to 'playing out from the back'?

Some teams do it, but in a more traditional way - I'd put us under AK in this bracket. We played a relative high line for a team playing out, but AK was all about possession and not losing the ball.

But some teams play a much more 'hard-core' version, where defenders will collect the ball almost level with the six yard box and try and play through teams - this can be a tough watch sometimes, like teams are taking massive risks, unnecessarily. I can only think of Swansea doing this from the teams at our level that I've seen, and they've had only limited success with it, in terms of results at least.

I think CW's style of high pressing and dynamic football would probably mean that we probably won't ever see us playing intricate football around our own box like Swansea do, but nevertheless the days of the long hoof from the back under NW are not going to be replicated - thankfully.

It's such a relief to see some decent football again under CW, we look like a team again, in every sense of the word.

Absolutely the right way to play, if the opposition press and you have the quality on the ball (which we have at this level despite Warnock‘s best efforts to coach it out of them) then you can create opportunities to attack at pace getting the other side turned. If they don’t press you have a better chance of retaining possession and eventually dragging them out of position to create opportunities.

Not a fan of insisting on doing it for the sake of it. It is not principled; it is not a philosophy; it is not "the right way" to play

Play the longball if it's on.
Don't become predictable or one dimensional.

Big "If".
Why? We have some good footballers across the back 3 & 5, Fry, can pass or carry the ball, McNair is comfortable as a midfielder as he is at the back and Dijksteel is a converted midfielder.

I see absolutely no reason why we can play this way, more so given CW's track record, with the only fly in the ointment being the fact that we played in an opposite way under NW.

Don't think we're good enough to do it at a lot of the time.

Bournemouth had 2 major chances against us and both were self-inflicted from attempting overly elaborate passes from from the back.
