Pick your England team for the World Cup

.......................Pickford....................

Walker....Stones.....Maguire...Shaw

.......Mount.....Rice....Bellingham.....

Sterling....................................Foden

........................Kane..........................

This bunch are better than the overhyped 'golden generation'.
They are better as a team because they have been managed better.
Ferdinand, Campbell, Terry, Cole, Scholes, Gerrard, Rooney, Lampard were arguably better individual players than those who play in their positions currently. Same could be said of the 96 and 98 teams.

Global embarrassment? Steady. Southgate has undoubtedly been a success and am delighted he is at the helm but we were not a “global embarrassment”. We just underperformed and Southgate was able to change that dysfunctional so called golden generation with equal talent who can play together. I always thought the problem with England 2006-2014 was that they were playing players because of who they were and not how they fitted in. Southgate changed that.

Did you watch us fail to qualify in 2008, stink the place out before being embarrassed by virtually Germanys U21s in 2010? Did you see us finish bottom of our group in 2014 and fail to score past footballing giants Costa Rica? Remember the uberhumiliation of Iceland and the omnnishambles of Fat Sam? I think Global embarrassment is pretty accurate.
Agree with the point that Southgate has got them playing as a team, rather than a group of talented individuals though.

No it wasn't embarrassing- we were not good enough.

Not embarrassing to be pipped by Croatia and Russia in 2008. Croatia the team that beat us in the semi finals in 2018.

Certainly not embarrassing to lose to an excellent young Germany in 2010 who then went on to humiliate Argentina in the next round 4-0 (and just lose to winners Spain 1-0 in the semi).

Yes agree the Icelandic shambles was truly awful but by then Hodgson was well past his sell by date and had lost the players.

When England lose I have no sense of feeling embarrassed in the slightest, just angry that the players didnt play to their potential.

Clearly they are now.

The majority of the 11 picks itself.

There's only really centre back where there are question marks for me.

Pickford is definitely number one, and rightly so.

James Maddison will have to be considered for the England squad now, he's had a brilliant individual season.

Brilliant player, but has had off the field issues. Breaking lockdown to party with his teammates, going to a casino whilst being injured on England duty, being involved in scraps outside clubs. Think his attitude has let him down at times, plus the likes of Mount, Foden, grealish, Saka are all clear imo

He's had a much better season than Grealish, who's also had plenty of off the field issues in his time.

Also got to say that there's something seriously wrong if Tomori isn't picked in the next England squad.

He's just won the league title with AC Milan whilst playing a key part in the best defence in the league.

I don't think you can justify excluding him this time.
Should be him and Stones in our next match.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Jarrod Bowen.

I think he’d be in the team for me, instead of Sterling.

Sterling is obviously a good player but for me the only reason he is in the team is because he is the only player who is happy to make runs in behind the defence, all the others want it to feet (Foden does both).

Bowen also runs in behind but is a better finisher than Sterling.

Not a chance. This crew have a much higher skill level.

Tomori and Abraham both doing well in Italy. Both should be in the Nations League squad.

I am 100% certain Abraham will be, he's always called up, even since he moved to Italy.

But Tomori has only made one squad since his debut 3 years ago.

Pickford

Walker
Stones
Tomori

James
Rice
Bellingham
Saka

Sterling
Kane
Foden

Would happily start Bowen instead of Sterling though if he keeps his current form up
