Places you ended up living but never thought you would??

Taking inspiration from the other thread, about places you thought you might visit but probably never will, got me thinking about places you end up living that you probably never imagined growing up.

I've been living in Bermuda for about two years, returning to the UK (London or Guisborough) for the odd month or so. When I was growing up, I never thought that I'd leave Guisborough, never mind live in London or overseas.

BTW. Bermuda is a great place to visit.

Matmata, Tunisia - beautiful people, wonderful place

i never thought i would be leaving me Nana's house on Colne Street - such were the attractions of lower Borough Rd, crossleys brick yard, greenwoods the pawnbrokers, the langbaurgh hotel and doggy market

BTW - phuq off - we dont want anymore visitors.

Never really thought about it growing up, as both my parents were born in Middlesbrough and have lived there all their lives, and so even though I knew I wanted to go away to University I just imagined I'd come back after a 3 year adventure and get a job on Teesside. My wife is also from Middlesbrough and so when we started dating then that looked even more likely.

However I've now spent more time living away from Boro as I did living there, in places I'd have never have thought of, namely Hertfordshire, Leeds, Edinburgh and San Francisco. I certainly didn't think I'd live outside of the UK, and certainly not in the USA, but funny how things turn out.

London had family there as a kid and hated it, but work is a must and there's lots of it.
Sydney just always really wanted to go to Australia as a kid, finally did and ended up there for 5 years.

Lived in a few places but these 2 stuck out.

Kazakhstan was an unusual but fantastic choice that I’d never have predicted. Brunei and Russia were also great places I didn’t think I’d live in. Thailand is a bit less unusual as there’s loads of expats, but never had any plans to ever live here until all of a sudden I did!

Went to see the Boro at Old Trafford when I was about 13. We drove over from Sheffield as we'd been visiting my uncle. Got stuck at the summit of Snake Pass because the traffic was so bad on the A57 into Manchester. Took us about an hour and a half to crawl through a place I'd never heard of - Glossop. Remember thinking what an awful town it must be to live in, nowt but a load of banks, a crap high street and terrible traffic.

Ended up moving here 15 years ago and absolutely love it. Traffic is still horrendous like.

I don't think I ever thought about where I might end up so, by definition, everywhere I've been satisfies the thread criterion. I certainly never thought I'd spend over 30 years in London.
