Playing out from the back

Teams know we are going to try it and set-up accordingly. Bristol City did a job on us first 20 minutes, pressing high up the pitch which resulted in us struggling to get out of our half then finding ourselves 2-0 down.

I don't know why we don't mix it up and play it long now and again, especially in the first 20 to 30 mins when players are fresh and close down quickly. It was suicide football today.

Bristol’s pressing absolutely killed us first half. The more they pressed the more our passing become poor. Hackney for their second was a perfect example. Playing a ball into a dangerous area, giving it away and them scoring directly from it (great finish from the lad it must be said).

I definitely think finding a centre halve who is confident playing out from the back is going to be important in the summer.

It's plain to see Fry isn't comfortable doing it.

Brentford caused Man City problems in midweek by playing long from goal kicks ,granted they have Toney to aim at but it shocked the Man City defence to have a team play direct football .
Sometimes we need to mix it up.

In fairness to Greenwood , he'd chase it .
Pointlessly like .
Long ball to hackney or Azaz running in the channels .. 🤣🤣🤣

Interesting op and I couldn't agree more. It hasn't just been today, it's starting to become a clear weakness.

Millwall were so well set up against us and absolutely nullified us for the first 30 minutes. It looked as though they were going to do a number on us and their goal came from their pressing and pressure. Unfortunately for them, they couldn't keep it up.

I recall three of the Chelsea goals came from us essentially giving possession away from the back, which given their quality, was at least understandable.

But today both goals we gifted them from our possession. You don't have to play like a Sam Allerdyce team by any means but it's infuriating that we are so predictable and continue to do the same thing when it's not working.

It's fine passing out from the back .. we just don't do it with any tempo, urgency or intensity .. everything is one paced .. we win the ball in midfield .. 3 of the opposition are out of position but instead of attacking the space they've left .. we turn backwards, play it back to one of our CDs or our QB Dan The Man so we can put into practice our moves we've worked on in training. We let the opposition filter back into their defensive shape and then set about playing risky little passes to tempt 3 of the opposition out of position so we can attack the space they've le ...... oh .. hang on .. we .. ermm .. had them in that position initially and we turned backwards ..

Barlaser going in between the CBs is hurting us more than it's helping us. It just gives us one less forward option.

He's only doing it because Barlaser needs that time. He still passes it sideways more than he goes forwards.

Just put him out the team and put two CMs in who are good enough to play under pressure
