The word was first used to describe the exposure and recognition of people like Harvey Weinstein, but has obviously since been hijacked by some sections of the media to mean something negative, which is a little sad really.

On June 14, 1965, Martin Luther King Jr gave the commencement address at Oberlin College. It had been two years after his iconic 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech at the March on Washington, and this oratory was meant to keep young Americans engaged and encouraged in a civil rights battle that was beginning to drag.

Entitled “Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution,” King’s speech lays out the three rules for winning the civil rights movement. He says, in short, 1) the globalized world has become a neighborhood; we must make it a brotherhood; 2) we must eradicate racial discrimination, a note to which I added economic, gendered and sexual, all three of which I am sure King would support; and, 3), we must approach rivals with non-violence. Dr. King of course was far more elegant, eloquent and masterful, so, without further ado, a truncated text version of MLK Jr.’s speech that day, as well as audio from a 1968 delivery in DC.

“There are all too many people who, in some great period of social change, fail to achieve the new mental outlooks that the new situation demands. There is nothing more tragic than to sleep through a revolution. There can be no gainsaying of the fact that a great revolution is taking place in our world today. It is a social revolution, sweeping away the old order… The wind of change is blowing, and we see in our day and our age a significant development. … The great challenge facing every individual graduating today is to remain awake through this social revolution.

First…. We are challenged to achieve a world perspective. Anyone who feels that we can live in isolation today, anyone who feels that we can live without being concerned about other individuals and other nations is sleeping through a revolution… What we are facing today is the fact that through our scientific and technological genius we’ve made of this world a neighborhood. And now through our moral and ethical commitment we must make of it a brotherhood. … No individual can live alone; no nation can live alone. We are tied together.

…Secondly… we are challenged to work passionately and unrelentingly to get rid of racial [and gender, sexual and economic] injustice in all its dimensions. Anyone who feels that our nation can survive half segregated and half integrated is sleeping through a revolution. The challenge before us today is to develop a coalition of conscience…

[Third,] we must get rid of violence, hatred, and war. Anyone who feels that the problems of mankind can be solved through violence is sleeping through a revolution. I’ve said this over and over again, and I believe it more than ever today…. I am convinced that violence ends up creating many more social problems than it solves. This is why I say to my people that if we succumb to the temptation of using violence in our struggle, unborn generations will be the recipients of a long and desolate night of bitterness.”

That was my recollection. He took it as personally directed at him but it wasn't. I don't think he was hounded off, I think people were indifferent to him leaving or desperate for him to stay.

I think there's only been a handful of posters over the years who have been targeted because of their politics and that's nearly always been down to their confrontational posting style more than anything else. Smalltown being one, who is anything but right wing.

Cooper springs to mind too.

And the less said about the paedo Tory councillor the better.

My god I can still remember his posts about James Wharton and the Tory party. Looking back he was treated fairly respectfully
It does seem a long time ago now where people tried to make counter arguments rather than just be abusive

Posts about Karanka were more fraught than the politics ones

The obvious change was Brexit and I think alot of confusion is when there's an assumption if you're pro EU you are left wing, which is clearly b***ks

Working and living away from Teesside since 1985, woke me up to inequalities and lack of opportunity in relative terms on Teesside. Also to the general economic decline of the area in relative terms. If I had stayed in the area I may have failed to notice the level of decline and more importantly clues on the reasons for it.

It does surprise me that the ordinary Teessider appears to take it to the degree they do. Although I think that there is a deep seated anger which could flare up if certain conditions are in place. June 2016 saw one.

Places like Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland do seem to lobby harder to get more economic help.

Grrr Grrr anger Grrr Grrr Sorry about that Grrr Grrr just keeps flaring up slowly going now Grr Gr G right Im off to the south like d*ck Whittington.

And if you’re left wing you are a communist and about to being down the country from within…which is rediculous

Other boards (including RTG) have separate forums for football, politics, health etc. Ours is all mixed together so some who go from thread to thread on football topics will be disappointed...

The old board was never the same once Smac left and Briggsy had to throw away his “toothy grin” Steve MacLaren duvet away.
