Promotion season 87/88

Think of lot of fans had enough of all the Football violence a footy match was not always a great place to take the kids tbf

Yes, 12,000 just before Christmas was a good crowd in those days. Helped by the fact that we were doing well. I think it was that Boxing Day we played Blackburn and had 23000, which was our biggest crowd for five years and seemed remarkable at the time.

Seem to remember an unusually large turnout from Blackburn who were also doing well.

Tommy Wright scoring for Oldham who later went on to sign for us under Lennie I think. One for the threads about footballers you had forgotten played for us. Although now I've remembered he played for us he is no longer valid.

My first season as a young whipper snapper.....many happy memories. I remember the "Bruce Requests" sign in front of the Holgate end......happy days !

Disappointing first half but the game turned on a moment of controversy just after the interval. A cross from Brian Laws looked like a comfortable take for the Stoke keeper but Kernaghan clattered into him and as everyone in the ground waited for the referee to blow for the free kick Gary Hamilton slotted the ball into the empty net. Bruce Rioch admitted after the game that he'd have been disappointed had he been Stoke manager Mick Mills.

The second came from a flowing move as Boro took advantage of the extra space as Stoke chased the game, Kernaghan playing in Slaven, who mishit his shot into the ground and over the keeper.

Twelve games unbeaten for Boro but concerns about their staying power with supporters demanding that Colin Henderson should loosen the purse strings to strengthen a wafer thin squad.
