The standard in 1992 was completely different to today, but they're happy to use that "record".

It's not fair enough at all.

59 is the record and likely always will be.

What would be fair enough is if they said Mitrovic has the record for most goals in a 46 game second division season, which he does, but that makes his record less impressive since he's had more games to score in than the 42 that used to be available.
We disagree, but that's OK.

The overall standard was worse in 1992, yes. It wasn't an entirely different game/era though. Camsell's 59 goals will still be a record, but I think it's fine that not much is being said about it. Perhaps they should be saying 'in the modern era' more about Mitrovic's record, or something like that.

And Camsell only played in 37.

What's the modern era?

They're using 1992 because that's when the Premier League started, there's no other reason.

They exclude the 23 goals Shearer scored in the First Division from his tally, was 1991 before the modern era?

For the avoidance of doubt, I do actually agree that the standards are completely different and it's hard to compare ability.

But the same could be said for every single generation of footballers.

There's every chance that the likes of prime Maradona and Pele couldn't make it in the current game because of huge differences in fitness and quality, but people are still more than happy to laud them as some of the greatest of all time, and rightly so.

The problem is that there's no agreed standard and the media are picking and choosing when records count and when they don't at random.

Fair enough mate. I agree it's a tough to compare different eras, as it is with all sports. (Golf as an example, Tiger Woods v Jack Nicklaus who is the GOAT etc).

I was merely saying above that [only in my opinion] it's OK for Mitrovic to be getting the plaudits for his remarkable season. (I also don't mind that 1992 is being used as a starting point). Personally I believe the Premier League, with all the finacial investment, foreign stars, and professionalism (playing/medical/nutrition/sports science) has pulled the standard up of the leagues below.

I just don't think a record set in the 1926/27 season can really be compared with 2022. (Which is why I said that I don't mind that hardly anyone is mentioning it).

To ignore records because they are old is complete nonsense.
How many times have Liverpool been champions of Europe?
How many World Cups have Italy won? Or England?
And you can't delete Huddersfield's league championships. Or Newcastle's trophies. Or Sunderland's. Just because they were sooooo.... long ago 😉

Just don’t get me started on whether Boro fielded an all English team against Fulham in 2006 or not…

It's actually mad what happened to the 2nd highest scorer in the history of the second tier.

In his first full season in 1951/52 in Derek Dooley scored 46 goals in 30 games.

In the next season he was on 16 goals after 29 games and he had his leg broken by a tackle from a goalkeeper in February.
A scratch on his leg from the tackle got infected and gangrenous, rumoured to be caused by chemicals in the paint using for the lines on the pitch, and he had to have his leg amputated at the age of 24.

At this level the standard was a lot higher. Sure there's more foreign players but the squads in the top flight are far bigger and they've hoovered up the British talent that would have filled the second tier, they're just squad players now.

I remember reading about him years ago...I think it happened at Preston.

Soz if this is elsewhere but I can't find it. But they were saying that Mitrovic with 40 goals is two short of the 'all time' record for the second 'tier'. That's utter utter bolleaux innit?
As you say, Capy, it is utter bolleaux!

Radio 5 ceased to exist in 1994!!
