Special mention to McDonald and Lita though, always enjoyed watching the two of them.

If we're classing Akpom as a striker, then surely he doesn't make the top5?

As a #10, then he easily makes the top 1!

But my top 5 are:

1) Akpom
2) Archer
3) Bamford
4) Latte Lathe
5) Stuani

Not sure if Stuani qualifies as he more often than not played wide. But he makes the list for that Brighton goal alone!

I think Nugent is slightly underrated. He was fantastic for us in that promotion season.

Unpopular opinion … but as a championship striker, in terms of goal return, Britts stats must be half decent including his forest days?

I think he was roughly 1 in 3 for us, 1 in 2 for Forest?

He wouldn’t make my Boro top 5 though 👍🏼

Tried to give some merit to their overall contributions for us, as well as longevity rather than just ability alone (number of goals Britt and Mcdonald scored for us bump them quite high up the list, despite me not really rating either). There may be some recency bias in there as well.

I know Chuba nominally played in a number 10 position but he was clearly actually a striker, the same way Salah might play wide on the right but is a striker, Ronaldo and Henry played wide from the left but were strikers.

Ultimately they're goalscorers and just playing from the position that best enables them to do that, but not playing the roles traditional to wingers or number 10s (even if they have aspects of that to their game).

Conversely you get players who play at centre forward but aren't out and out strikers but either creative or the foil for the main scorer, or do other jobs - ie Dave Nugent with his constant (funny) running.

The one exception to this theorem I'd say is Messi because he was an exceptional goalscorer but also a hugely creative playmaker from wherever he played so is exceptionally difficult to box into any label regardless of what position he actually played, his role as a footballer transcended that.

I also quite liked McDonald but most folk seemed to hate him.

Gaston? Tomlin?
Gaston is right up there.

In fact, if we're going back further, then Merson is the best #10 we've ever had in the 2nd division and it's not even close.

But I was assuming its since this league was called The Championship.

Gaston was brilliant, but I'd still probably say Akpom. He absolutely tore it up last season.

I doubt we'd have clinched the auto's without Gaston, though.

I'm pretty sure Stuani didn't start a single game as a striker in the championship for us. Moved to that position in a couple as a tactical tweak (and did very well) but not enough to qualify IMO.

Also, an interesting stat. Stuani only scored 7 goals in his single season in the championship for us.

Jones has scored 8 this season from the same position.

He did, at Oldham in the cup, on his debut (scored twice).

Forss has played a few up front for us, at least half a dozen or so?

So should be on the list but hard one to judge where because he's had more success playing out wide.
