What is uncivilised about displays of patriotism ?I grew up believing we lived in a civilised society, I don't like to see us lurching towards America.

I feel that worship and obedience to a bit of fabric borders on the ridicilous. It is in my view uncivilised as the attempt is to distract the electorate; don't pay attention to what I'm saying other than the odd slogan, instead look at the pretty flag and think how patriotic we all are. What is uncivilised about displays of patriotism ?
They know that if they win the red wall votes they will keep the Labour Party where it is which is firmly in opposition. They know that your average red wall voter is patriotic. Starmer knows he desperately needs his red wall back as well hence his flag has come out. It’s not hard to join the dots here is it?Don't know about you Jim but a show of patriotism has not been top of my list to give my vote. A degree of competence and honesty are probably first and foremost. That would Jenrick out on both counts but thankfully I am not one of his constituents.
So I assume you feel the SNP are uncivilised?I feel that worship and obedience to a bit of fabric borders on the ridicilous. On the larger debate I’m interested in flags and symbology. It’s a fascinating subject. It’s amazing how we can make people believe in something or change their behaviour just by waving a piece of fabric at them.My biggest issue with flags is what they represented historically. The flag was used for 100s of year to signal oppression, conquest and subjugation - see Eddie Izard's piece on colonialism.
There's an incredibly good book (which I can't remember the name of - divided geography maybe?) which outlines the history of state building and how flags became a symbol of oppression. Some very arbitrary examples, particularly in the Middle East.
I don't have a problem with anyone with a flag I just said that having the biggest flag is no criteria for voting for someone. They know that if they win the red wall votes they will keep the Labour Party where it is which is firmly in opposition. Does anyone have a problem with Sturgeon and her Saltire? The Irish and their tricolour?
I agreeI don't have a problem with anyone with a flag I just said that having the biggest flag is no criteria for voting for someone.
Yep. Raab had one on yesterday. The lapel badges are coming mark my words.
Hitler had a flag behind him at all times
Yep. Raab had one on yesterday.
Ian Blackford and Alex Salmond have been wearing them for twenty years. Strangely it’s offended nobody on here that I’m aware of.Yep. Raab had one on yesterday.
Don’t hold yer breath. I’m sure a certain person will start a 300 pager on his European obsession shortly. If not there’s always if not there’s always Harry to keep us occupied for about three days. This has to be one of the most ridiculous threads I’ve ever read. People getting their knickers in a twist over a flag display
people saying we’re one step away from the nazis and someone else wanting to cancel flags
Because the sole purpose of the SNP is to gain independence, surely you can see the difference in why some tories are doing it. They have been told to do it, or are you nieve enough to think they all had the idea at the same time.Ian Blackford and Alex Salmond have been wearing them for twenty years. It's a rallying point for the infantile, no need to read or listen to anything, just look at the picture and bow. For people who still believe Britannia rules the waves. It doesn't.
I know why the Tories are doing it I said so above so I’m not sure where my naivety comes from. They want to keep the working class patriotic vote in the red wall seats they won at the last election. That’s why Starmers flag has miraculously appeared coz he needs these votes back sharpish . I did say this above and I know exactly why it’s happening at the same time with both parties. The SNP are appealing to Scottish patriotism in an attempt to gain independence. They are politicians playing to the public but you get the distinct impression on here that British patriotism is bad while all others are fine. Strange.Because the sole purpose of the SNP is to gain independence, surely you can see the difference in why some tories are doing it. I don't think anyones getting "their knickers in a twist" , it's just sad and laughable in equal measures
