Sam Greenwood

I've been critical of him from very early on. Even when he was supposedly playing well I wasn't seeing it. He has had some great moments but no great games.

I really think he is one of the worst decision makers I've ever seen in a Boro shirt. He clearly has technical ability but he just never uses it correctly. He holds the ball and runs into blind alleys constantly. He shoots from anywhere and it's rarely the best option. He's created next to nothing because he invariably loses the ball (by shooting from miles out or failing to dribble through a crowd). Defensively he's a liability.

I think a lot of his failings are because he's really a striker and not an attacking midfielder or winger. That's where he's played all his youth football. Getting the ball and working into a position to shoot us what a striker would do but it doesn't make sense 40 yards from goal. He's not fast enough or strong to play as a striker at this level so if he wants to play at this level he's going to have to learn how to be a midfielder. I don't think he's going to succeed in that and I don't want to pay the asking price and see him struggle for several seasons without improving until we release him on a free because nobody else will buy him off us and pay his high wages.
Grest summary fundamentally he lacks footballing intelligence ie he will do the same thing time after time and wont adjust to different scenarios on the pitch. To me he is individual with good skills but not a team player. Finally and most significantly hes a young player carrick hasn't improved or even seem to have an impact on. For all those reasons i would look elsewhere

He's definitely getting worse. Although being kind he's maybe just shot of confidence. I have a feeling he probably knows he's not coming back next season.

Also that Leeds probably won't want him. So I guess a big uncertain summer ahead. Also maybe one eye on not getting crocked (although you'd hope not).

Only really O'Brien and Ayling likely to be on our radar in terms of loans becoming a perm.

I would like us to just give Silvera a run for the final 4 games. He's ours and will benifit going into next season. That or Finch (if fit). I think Greenwood's Boro career is frankly 'on the beach' and has offered nothing for weeks.

I've asked this before (and not had a response) but if his attitude and work rate are as bad as some make out why does Carrick persist? It can't be lack of options as he could have played Silvera last night.

I don't think we will be taking up the offer on him in the summer. However it has to be noted that Carrick has persisted with him. I know we have injuries but he could have played silvera who's stats per start are not bad. 10 starts, 4 goals and an assist.

Maybe Carrick sees something that we are all missing.

It’s not his workrate I have an issue with. It’s his quality. Offers next to zero. Never seen an attacking player look less comfortable with the ball at his feet.

Similar question then. Why do you think Carrick persists? We do have options.

I don’t know. That is the issue here. That he is persisting in selecting him. It is probably the fact he tries to close players down high and fast.

But he isn’t good enough and we can all see that. If McGree was fit he would be on the bench but he isn’t so he is unfortunately in the team.

I would try Silvera next game or even Bangura as he can at least carry the ball although it wouldn’t be a natural starting position for him.

If you look at greenwood's stats he is awful at running with the ball and gets dispossessed too often. Not to mention he leaves engel very exposed. And when I say awful I mean in the bottom 10% for dribbling and being dispossessed.

I assume Carrick doesn't think silvera is ready to play 2 games a week.

He’s poor, even worse with Engel behind him, there is literally no chemistry between them, as a pairing they bring the worst out of each other. Strangely I think if Leeds don’t get promoted we will sign him, at 1.5m I think they will see it at as a no risk signing, he’s played enough games/showed enough potential to get that fee back, even if he shows no improvement, a champo club will take a punt on him for that fee. Issue is wages, if Leeds go up, he’s on reported £50k a week, not a chance a champo club will take that on. I’ve heard he’s on £25k now, Boro paying £15k, Leeds making up the difference.

To be fair, of that £25k, his sponsorship from Aquafresh is £22k.

Yep that’s the the thing that stands out with Greenwood. How often he he just walks in to opposition players. He looks so uncomfortable trying to dribble with it. Doesn’t look natural at all.

Not a player I rate for us, can probably count on one hand the number of good games he's had for us.

Even most of his goal involvements came in matches where he was fairly anonymous for large periods.
The goal against Leicester being a big example of that, scored the winner in a match he'd not really played well in.

I wouldn't take up the option in the summer.

I think Carrick persists because he’s the best of a trio of players doesn’t really think are good enough. Greenwood has been a poor signing. I don’t think you can dress it up. I think the fact he’s in the team ahead of Gilbert and Silvera is a damning indictment of those two as well. And the youth team. There’s clearly nobody ready to step up. I think if we’re not producing players of our own deemed at least as good as these three then our academy is in trouble imo.

I don’t support the idea of using your loans for players like Greenwood. Archer, Giles, Ramsey, some of the loans Aitor did, absolutely. You use it for quality you can’t otherwise afford. Not hopeful punts. And it’s not as if Greenwood was an easy deal to do if he did well with us and Leeds went up. I honestly don’t know why we’ve done it. He’s been poor value. He’s not as good as players like Lewis Wing or Marvin Johnson or Duncan Watmore. He doesn’t have anywhere near the impact they had because at least those three worked their knackers off for the team. Greenwood seems to coast instead.

Ok but Carrick was quoted the other day being very positive about him (and indeed his workrate) and his impact this season. Do you think he is just saying that and really thinks the opposite?

Rather than repeatedly trying to ask questions why you think Carrick plays him why don't you offer an opinion?

Do you think he should be playing?

Do you think he should be signed?

Are we all right to be a bit disgruntled by his form for a good few months?

Or are we all wrong because Carrick keeps playing him?

I posted my opinion earlier in the thread.

I just find it fascinating that as you put it 'we all' think he is terrible yet Carrick doesn't seem to.

Lets see how highly Carrick rates him in the summer. I will be stunned if he is back here. Not sure why your going overboard to defend him, He isn't offering us much.
