Should all NHS workers be given a thank you lump sum

It doesn't stay low though.
Our local GPs average £70k.
GP's do all right, that is true, but in a hospital there is no natural promotion from junior doctor, you have to wait until something opens up, it can take years. Doctors are very poorly paid. Once you factor in the hours, very few earn the minimum wage. The average time for a doctor to stay a junior doctor is just over 7 years. For that entire period they are paid terribly.

As for your local GP, it's probably a bit more than that but I earn more than that too.

Are you including utility workers too? Those who work in supermarkets? Those teachers who've continued to work in schools with apparent high risk child super spreaders? What about the military? The police? Fire brigade?
No just the NHS that’s the point.

Say 3-5k as a thank you from the nation.

by NHS I mean not just the Drs and Nurses but cleaners porters ambulance drivers etc.
You can answer your own question here- Would you rather have a once in a lifetime bonus or would you rather have decent pay that doesn't necessitate you having to claim benefits or use food banks?

Ok two issues here what is a “decent pay rise” 2 3 4 10 % this won’t happen you know it I know it. Of course this should happen but it won’t.

but this lump sum would be something tangible something real and a nice thank you to all those who have served the NHS so well.

not in place of any pay rise btw as that’s a separate issue.

I'm not sure about the concept of a bonus. Who would get it, every NHS worker including those who haven't faced the public? My wife works in a front line NHS job and yes she's been at risk but she's been on her usual pay throughout. It's people who've lost their jobs & businesses who need a bonus payment. It's the same with the mountains of free food people have been dropping off for the hospital workers. Well intentioned and appreciated, but they aren't the people who need it.
In terms of NHS workers I agree with what others have said, it's the long term salary increases that are more appropriate but I do get the point that that's unlikely to match a large bonus in the short term

I'm quite shocked to hear that, I must admit.

I agree zorro. But once the bonus has gone, perhaps on paying debt racked up during the crisis, then it is back to same old, same old. And anyway, what is a "tangible and real" bonus? How much would it be? And you can bet your last penny that the bonus will be taken into account when calculating their benefits. Don't get me wrong, I am all for rewards and bonus's. .
To me, a decent pay rise will be one that takes away the need for benefits and food banks- no working person should EVER have to claim benefits or use foodbanks. In fact benefits alone should be enough to live off without the need for foodbanks, but that is a different debate.

I didn't realise they were so poorly paid- how on earth do they live off such a low income.
I did a lot of work for the BMA about 10 years ago, it opened my eyes. GP's and specialists are reasonably paid. A GP with a specialism can get 100-110 grand per year. The vast majority start of as junior doctors and do, sometimes as many as 15 years on a crappy salary for 42 hours, and end up doing, on average 72 hours. Some weeks it can be 100 hours.
It really is appalling.

Just googled nhs staff - came up as 187000 people. Multiply that by 3 grand and you are looking at a lot of money. That’s before all the other workers

Sounds a lot but giving some of the money spent of late then why not!

5th biggest employer in the world , so they say .............lot of cash to find, ! son drives a petrol tanker , not been off , daughter manages care home .......where do you stop !

Pay them all footballers wages.

or is that soldiers? I can’t keep up but I’m sure the maths would work out fine.

That seems a very low number to me. Surely it's a lot more than that.

I’m led to believe from my wife who works at James Cook that a substantial pay rise is in the system for April.. the unions are currently in discussions
