Six nations starts today!!

I agree it doesn’t work. Farrell I’d have back at No 10: where does that leave Smith? On the bench I’m afraid.
I would hope, styled wise at least 8td be Smith favoured over Farrell. Borthwick seems to be going for s more creative team and, of course, having Nev as attack coach is going to help Smith.

You may be right though. As Ireland showed us yesterday, creative rugby is all well and good but international rugby can be won with relentless monotony and power

Exactly hence my opinion on Farrell over Smith. I was alarmed yesterday at the ease with which the Scots backs cut through the Defensive line.

That was probably one of the worst England performances in decades. Beaten by a side that lost to Italy says it all. How many tackles did England make? Something like 3 times less than Scotland— quite embarrassing. Ok I get it that Borthwick is experimenting etc but the team was so lightweight the Scots probably could have won it much easier..

I don't think it is about winning the 6 Nations this year, it is more about ironing out the creases for the World Cup in France. The French must be the favourites for that on home soil.

Borthwick to start with a win today.
If it’s creases they will be looking at then they’ll need a few tonnes of cement for the cracks and perhaps a good depth finder to understand how deep they are lol 😆

That's a very strange perspective. It wasn't the worst England performance in in decades, but neither was it the best Scottish performance either. England got it wrong with the tactics, seem to be getting the strategy wrong, but the new guy needs some time.

I'm sorry I just can't share your pessimism. Yes it's a work in progress but Scotland were damn good. Lots of individual brilliance. You can't dsicount them. I like the change in style. It's nice to not see a trugid lumpen England perform

You're mad if you think that was a "bad" England performance. It was the brightest performance I have seen in a long time - it was just unfortunate it was coupled with a lot of individual mistakes. I thought Dombrandt didn't have great game, a couple of knock ons after good passes from Smith and an atrocious attempt at a tackle for Van Der Merwe's first try. Owen Farrell was out of position for both of Scotland's first two tries and left Marchant wide open to be attacked on his inside. Ben White's try was laughable and you could see what Sinfield thought when the screen showed him blowing his cheeks out. We're talking about basic defending from the bottom of a ruck.

I thought our set-piece was poor barring a couple of scrums, but I am sure Borthwick will have this in hand.

Lewis Ludlam had his best game in an England shirt for me - Ollie Chessum was decent if not for a couple of minor errors at the line outs - Ellis Genge was Ellis Genge, 9/10 as always - Sinckler was back to his best - Curry's first 6 Nations performance was promising - Marcus Smith was alert and put some decent plays together. If Finn Russell does what Marcus did for our first try, then its a headline try.

For me, a large portion of our game which needs the most improvement is the amount of yards we carry. We make small 1-2 metre carries and go through the phases, but the more phases generally leads to more mishandles, more counter rucks and misplaced passes. I'd really like to see us break through lines at times and carry 8-12 metres at a time to really pull defences back into line and push for offsides when then opposition isn't set. Italy did this really well yesterday against the French.

Ouch!

We really lost our way didn't we?

Everyone could see it apart from the RFU though. Pundits, podcasts, ex-professionals all discussed Jones's tactic and choices being poor, negative, non-creative etc, but he would pull his World Cup 2023 caveat card and somehow get away with it, as if he had some insane card up his sleeve. His quote in the Autumn about " not giving too much away" was absolute nonsense. It made you believe that players were giving 50% each game just so we can throw the full 100% in September.

I'm already convinced the performances from England in this tournament will get better.

I didn't expect Italy v France to be the closest scoring game.
I didn't either, especially after 15 minutes!

Great performance from Italy to keep in it. and so close to winning, Capouzzo is a delight to watch. In a world where everyone has to be massive to succeed it's good to see an old fashioned, slight, jinky little winger still able to do well. He could sidestep you in a phone box.

Slight Quins related tangent but it's weird to me how the Italian 10 is called "Tomasso" when he plays in Italy but plain old "Tommy" when he plays for us. Probably the first Italian to anglicise their name since Andrea Silenzi asked to be called "Andy" when he was at forest

Some say Ange could outstep you on a phone book, let alone phone box. ;)

Good Analysis that. I was impressed by Chessum, some great carries. As you say, one thing we can assume is that Borthwick will get the set pieces ironed out. He knows the line out inside out.

Curry's performance was weird to watch for me. Because Tom has played so many games, I almost expected an identikit performance. which of course was never going to happen for a player on his debut, just the mind playing tricks, seeing a familiar face and name playing!

Good shout RE Finn Russell as well. That Marcus Smith kick pass was epic, sometimes he sees things before anyone else does. In fact I don't really get the hype about Russell. In the last few weeks I've seen him v Smith twice now and Smith has looked far the superior player, despite Russell's team wining both matches.

I think ultimately, what we do as England sport fans is attempt to pinpoint the failings in our own ranks rather than highlight the quality in our oppositions. Scotland were ruthless for 85% of the game on Saturday and when you're that good for that portion of a game, any team is going to struggle against them.

Passing was pinpoint accurate, carries were strong and follow up well by a strong pod, set pieces were well worked - twice they went over the top at the line out and managed to carry the ball well into contact and then to not contest the line out in the dying moments was a masterstroke. They drove England back 10 metres.

I was hopeful given that they had no Zander Fagerson, Hamish Watson or Darcy Graham that we might get a look in - it is frightening to see how good Scotland can actually be when they are back in the starting XV.

Scotland have been unlucky in the 6 nations for a few years now. Their talent hasn't really delivered the results it deserves recently

Another notable performance was Van Poortvliet - I felt he did nothing wrong whilst he was on and the speed definitely improved from Autumn. Noticed he was given a 7/10 for his performance which I think is decent at this level.

I would like to see a little more creativity the more comfortable he gets at 9. The odd snipe (like his try against Argentina) and grubber would be great to see to mix things up. If you know the ruck ball is going back to the 1st/2nd receiver, as an opposition you can sit quite comfortably into your line and attack the phase with speed.

I must admit I don't know much about JVP, I just prefer him over Youngs. I respect Youngs, he has a lot of experience and he is very consistent I just can't get excited by his play. I agree with you, we need 9s who mix it up a bit. You need to know the scrum half MIGHT do something cheeky. Keep the defence on their toes, at least distract a player or to to cover any ball that could come off the ruck differently.
