Some people are saying the WC final was the best match ever played!!

Given the importance though, it will be remembered as one of the greatest games of all time I’ve no doubt.

Especially factoring in the Messi v Mbappe thing.

It was brilliant wasn’t it. We witnessed greatness on both sides. I took a picture of my baby boy pointing at the screen when Messi held the World Cup in his hands. He’ll wanna see that one day.

Considering the stage, it is the best match that was played in modern day football.
Biggest stage, the two best players in the world performing to that level and unpredictability until the last second. Can’t ever see another game topping that

Think of everything Messi has achieved in his career.

Think of everything that Mbappe will achieve in his career.

Combine the two.

Maccarones header was better!
I was running around my house like a headless chicken with sheer excitement when that header hit the back
of the net and god only knows where I could have ended up had I had been living in a high rise apartment
at the time, that of which I now live.
Over the balcony and splattered on the ground below would've been a probability rather than a possibility. :D
My favourite Boro goal of all time.

Just to add to the topic though, barring the excitement of being a twelve year old when witnessing England lift the
cup back in 66, this World Cup, for me, has been the most exciting and pleasurable to watch since that magical day.

Those that chose to not watch or get involved with this tournament have missed a truly remarkable event and I feel I will
have to live for another 68 more years to witness any better.

It was absolutely brilliant wasn’t it.

There have been better games of football played of course (probably a couple a month in the Premier League alone) but games of those stakes are a very small sample size. Really it’s just World Cup and Champions League finals, but Champions League happens every year and wasn’t as big of a deal 25-30 years ago. TV and money has given it a bigger importance. World Cup is still absolutely the greatest achievement in football. Mainly because you only get to play in 3 if you’re lucky, and you can’t buy it.

I think what made it so brilliant was that unlike the other great games (Liverpool in Istanbul, us vs Basel!) it wasn’t a miracle comeback. Was jaw-dropping how toe to toe it was, that last few seconds with Martinez’s save with his feet and the Argentines skimming the post was unbelievable. Finals are often cagey and one-sided. Plus a “happy” ending, the narratives around Messi gilding his magnificent career with the biggest trophy of all and passing the torch to Mbappe, just unbelievable drama and what a showpiece final. Have never seen so many grown men cry at the end!

Imagine being a 10 year old kid (like I was in 1990 watching Gazza just missing that cross) and watching that. Very special match.

Good post although the last sentence should read 1996.

Arguably the best final ever played.

Wouldn't say it was the best match though.
"There are people on the pitch........they think it's all over......it is now!"🏆

The winners came from behind, last minute equaliser, some bloke scored a hat-trick and it wasn't settled with a penalty shoot out. Oh, aye and England won.🙂

I could take or leave the first 70 minutes. Was very passive about the game in general. Was drifting in and out.

I was on the edge of my seat beyond that- was drawn in and it was massively exciting. A game that epitomises football for me. It can be awful at times, but the reason you love it is because it can change in seconds.

The game was poor for most of the 90 and the first Argentina pen was soft, bordering on dodgy, too much gamesmanship/shithousery allowed (particularly Martinez in the pen shoot out). Also the interminable drooling every time Messi touched the ball was irritating.

Good but nowhere near the best ever.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly.

Thought it was a very dull first 70mins.

Was infuriated that Argentina got a pen for that when Kane didn't get one for a much bigger contact.

Really exciting end to the game of course and extra time was brilliant.

What on earth was that women's see through dressing gown thing that they made messi wear at the end? That was weird.
