Yes and so it should imo. Gripping viewingGiven the importance though, it will be remembered as one of the greatest games of all time I’ve no doubt.
I was running around my house like a headless chicken with sheer excitement when that header hit the backThink of everything Messi has achieved in his career.
Think of everything that Mbappe will achieve in his career.
Combine the two.
Maccarones header was better!
Good post although the last sentence should read 1996.It was absolutely brilliant wasn’t it.
There have been better games of football played of course (probably a couple a month in the Premier League alone) but games of those stakes are a very small sample size. Really it’s just World Cup and Champions League finals, but Champions League happens every year and wasn’t as big of a deal 25-30 years ago. TV and money has given it a bigger importance. World Cup is still absolutely the greatest achievement in football. Mainly because you only get to play in 3 if you’re lucky, and you can’t buy it.
I think what made it so brilliant was that unlike the other great games (Liverpool in Istanbul, us vs Basel!) it wasn’t a miracle comeback. Was jaw-dropping how toe to toe it was, that last few seconds with Martinez’s save with his feet and the Argentines skimming the post was unbelievable. Finals are often cagey and one-sided. Plus a “happy” ending, the narratives around Messi gilding his magnificent career with the biggest trophy of all and passing the torch to Mbappe, just unbelievable drama and what a showpiece final. Have never seen so many grown men cry at the end!
Imagine being a 10 year old kid (like I was in 1990 watching Gazza just missing that cross) and watching that. Very special match.
"There are people on the pitch........they think it's all over......it is now!"Arguably the best final ever played.
Wouldn't say it was the best match though.
Was it the best World Cup final ever? Or was it the one that was played at Lord’s in 2019."There are people on the pitch........they think it's all over......it is now!"
The winners came from behind, last minute equaliser, some bloke scored a hat-trick and it wasn't settled with a penalty shoot out. Oh, aye and England won.
Well England got a good slice of luck on both occasions, I know that. Was it the best World Cup final ever? Or was it the one that was played at Lord’s in 2019.
Worse. They didn’t have their first attempt on target (over the bar) until the 70th minute! From then on it turned from a one sided game into the dream final we craved.I thought France were absolutely dire for 60 minutes. Was a boring game in that time
Pretty much my thoughts exactly. The game was poor for most of the 90 and the first Argentina pen was soft, bordering on dodgy, too much gamesmanship/shithousery allowed (particularly Martinez in the pen shoot out). Also the interminable drooling every time Messi touched the ball was irritating.
Good but nowhere near the best ever.
