Some unpleasant posting on here of late

The tory shill stuff does seem daft to me. Maybe I'm misunderstanding what's meant by it. Are some of you literally thinking there's loads of people employed by the Conservative party to post on fmttm? Why?
To be honest, I'd be surprised if there isn't. Smoggy89/Rainbow etc. started out that way. He certainly wasn't a boro fan trying to keep up with the latest transfer rumours.

We've definitely had them on the other forum I post on and not just from the conservative party.

So, if Tory shills exist on here, does that mean that Labour shills are a thing too? Nobby is obviously a Green Party plant 🙂

I still don't think he was a "shill" though. He was a tory councillor and a moron and posted in the way I'd expect a moronic tory councillor to do so. I suppose my question is this, do you think he got some sort of payment from the tory party specifically for posting on here?

My recollection of him is he'd say something idiotic like "Britain's open for business with Cameron!" with just no context or anything around it, and then never reply to anything anyone said after that on the threads. So he surely can't have been on any kind of payment per post deal, or he'd have been trotting out replies left and right.

I don't know the truth of it but I'd be surprised if he stumbled across the board without a helping hand. He was fairly young so presumably seen as 'social-media savvy'.

Perhaps not a paid shill but certainly not just a regular punter with a set of political beliefs. He tried very hard to avoid being pinned down - I'm pretty sure he was outed as a councillor.

TheLodger is a Labour councillor but doesn't post that sort of propaganda and is pretty open about his position.

He did trot out things left right and centre. He also was LGBQ rep for MFC or put himself forward as it. Also a few of his young Tory door knockers often spent time on here also admitting it. However they had a facebook account that they made up stories about Dr Williams, I think the police were involved iirc. Thing is on here they stand out a mile. Only saying

He did more than that, got into some proper arguments. Once accused me of discrimination towards Jacob Rees-Mogg for being posh 😂. Ended up banned anyway didn't he? Had some pretty repulsive views even before he hit the headlines.

I think when people say "shill" its not necessarily someone paid specifically to come on here and post lies. I certainly use it as shorthand for someone who is possibly a tory member or close to a local politician who comes on pretending to be Labour or a floating voter (might not technically be a shill, but its as good a term as any).

You don't think the likes of Houchen, Clarke, Young et al don't have people (including staff, friends and family etc) all over social media pretending to be neutrals who just "don't trust Labour" and similar?

Of course they do. In fact we've just seen them do it on question time.

Fair enough, yes this makes sense to me.

That's certainly true, QTs been exposed doing that multiple times over the years.

It comes across to me stu as if, in some cases, tory voters are suggesting alternatives to Labour. For example nobby and his vote green. Others parrot the line that they are all as bad as each other.

It appears to me to be an attempt at limiting the loss of tory seats at the next election by watering down the labour vote.

I don't think they are paid by tory hq. They may just be active in their local tory party and this tactic has been suggested to them. Plenty of shills will be paid by the tories though and you see them on live YouTube feeds regularly.

I suspect that's what folks think.

On the subject of how far the tories are prepared to go. Look at the media campaign just launched by the tories for the mayoral campaign. They attempt to stoke racial hatred in London by using a woman in a burka.

If you or I did that we would be arrested by the police for hate crimes.

So why not just say “Tory”

It’s seems that “shill” is superfluous and is just a pejorative term used as an insult

Because there's a difference between being a tory voter who admits to being one and explains why, and someone who is part of the party machinery (to some extent) and pretending they're not interested in politics or are a "lifelong labour voter" but then trying to slyly drop in tory propoganda.

In fact quite a big difference. Fat Cat for example, was a tory but he wasn't a shill.

If you look at the dictionary definition where it's someone pretending to be genuine, then I think it's entirely accurate.

I don't think we can include 89 in any group. Clearly mentally ill on top of his other issues.

Maybe shill isn't the right word but there are a worrying group of people who will defend the Tories and spread their rhetoric but when challenged. Instead of explaining why, they will jsut say "Oh I'm not political" or "I don't vote Tory".
That's obviously a very clear example something isn't right. Imagine wanting to defend the Tories but knowing that they are so toxic you can't admit to being one? You'd have to question WHY you were defending something you knew was wrong

This is why the polls were largely wrong in pretty much all 4 elections between 2010 and 2019.

I can't really remember the 80s (apart from Michael Jackson and Button Moon), so I've no idea how 'embarrassed' people felt about voting Tory back then.

Its been pretty obvious that during this entire era that most Tory voters haven't liked to admit it to their friends/people down the pub/even families etc unless they are shamelessly against immigration and progressive thinking, or staunch traditionalists.

The majority of their voters (how they won near-landslides etc) are probably decent human beings but who have allowed Tory propaganda to seep into their thinking, they're not all bad. Its just that the same argument doesn't work the other way round as there is basically no such thing as a 'shy-Labour voter'.
