Nobody on here as far as I know but you know aswell as I do there are people in this country who want rid of the armed forces, get rid of the nukes or drastically reduce numbers of our armed forces even more.Who is on about doing away with air capability to zero, who is going to take over us, and how would they get away with that?
It's worth having some air defence, but ordering a 200 Typhoons wasn't the right idea. Even keeping the 100 we ended up with was a bad idea, and selling the other 100 to the Saudi's (and them taking our most experienced guys to train the Saudi's) was an even worse idea.
As long as we're in NATO, and stay on good terms with the USA we're pretty safe. We spend about 2.5% of GDP on defence, most of the others spend 1.5%.
The MOD want a dog and procurement offer a Cat with a mod. Been like it for years. From bitter experience of the tender and contracting process, we tend to start out with several requirements for equipment, industry come up with something, we then say 'can it do this, and this & this', and then we end up with a jack of all trades (see Tornado), and end up with something that does nothing good, but all things moderately.
The more toys on board the better the chances of something going wrong.Spitfire. Tornado. Harrier Jump Jet.
And we have a £100million plane that flops into the sea.

Ah, my first choice when I went to the careers office on Borough Road was airframe/propulsion apprentice. As Andy W said. No way an engine can be started , go through pilot and Groundcrew walk rounds, taxi to take off spot without any FOD or engine blank being ingested well before takeoff. I’m an aircraft engine engineer (sootie/Airframes) . Catastrophic engine failure or pilot error can be the only explanation.
Probably duped by the knowledgeable careers person who just needed to fill slots. I joined as YTS because they said there was a 2 year waiting list.Ah, my first choice when I went to the careers office on Borough Road was airframe/propulsion apprentice.
Ended up commissioned as a Movements Officer - work that one out
