Starmer drops another pledge

Dealing with the VAT though and in doing so see’s no need to drop the charitable status? I am not sure if that is right or not, but I haven’t looked into how that would affect school finances. Have you? If so could you explain what I am missing?

Correct me if I’m wrong. Private schools losing their charitable status would mean VAT being added to the fees, so a 20% increase for parents. The government would then claim all that extra VAT revenue. The only people losing out would be the parents of these children.

It will be the parents who pay the VAT, so the schools will still maintain all their tax break benefits.

That’s probably what will happen.
The schools could, of course, drop their fees accordingly so the families pay the same with schools getting less and taxation going to the state.

They won’t of course

Partially correct. Private schools get huge tax breaks as well. Removing charitable status would remove those tax breaks too.

This compromise approach of leaving charitable status unchanged but charging VAT impacts parents who pay the fees, but leaves all of the school’s tax breaks untouched.

Whats not to like unless your Adidem

Not sure how a charitable status effects the taxpayer. If VAT is being charged it raises he money that Starmer has talked about previously. If the schools maintain their charitable status, does that cost me or the treasury anything?

Of course it does.

If the schools get tax breaks the treasury gets less. They have to make that up elsewhere.

Guess how….

Yes but what tax breaks do they get. One would assume they pay no corporate tax, but as a charitable organization they won't make a profit anyway, they are not allowed to.

So what other tax breaks do they get? As far as I can see they get tax relief on donations. Whilst charitable status would mean vat tax relief, starmer says he will remove this.

Are we getting annoyed about something we don't need to be?
