Steve Bell sacked

Surely anyone can be a 🛎️ 🔚 irrespective of their religion or otherwise, I fail to see it as antisemitic, surely it is targeted at his leadership role and decision making, which also seemingly contains a level of hypocrisy, or am I misunderstanding something alarmingly? Why this and not after others, why now?

If we are living in a world of woke where free speech against a person of religious belief is assumed illegal because they happen to represent a people of strong religion, I’d urge everyone to come out as a Jewislahinchrisabud for starters.

Ok, I've just read up on the news. It's because he's modelled the 'toon on Shylock from the Merchant Of Venice. Shylock is himself presented as a 'typical' Jew, wanting his 'pound of flesh' from someone who can't afford to pay him. I put the word 'typical' in inverted commas because it's a fairly obvious anti-Semitic trope. I do think Bell is on dodgy ground here. Sad, as I've long been a fan.

People will find offence where they want to find it.

This whole Shylock thing seems pretty tenuous to me, he's clearly referenced a cartoon from the 60s about Lynton Johnson and vietnam. You have to make a bit of a leap to get to Shylock.

Seems like any cartoon featuring Israel or any figure of Jewish descent is gone over in forensic detail looking for any possible hint it might have anti-Semitic connotations and then negative assumptions are drawn. It's not healthy.

Looks to me as antisemitic as the one about Priti Patel was anti-hindu (I don't think either are). But the guardian are happy to stand by that one.

If he was referencing Shakespeare perhaps we should cancel the Bard, and Dickens too for good measure.
I think you'll find there's already a broad agreement on their more dodgy work. Neither are now staged without remedial work on some characterisations.

Didn’t he quote another cartoon when he submitted it from a Levine or something.

I don’t see how taking your flesh as a Jew is modelling on Shylock, unless I’m missing something

Is Merchant of Venice now beyond the pale? Did it for O level and went to Stratford to see it.
