Stuff you didnt know

One thing I didn't know for a long time is what the "para" in paralympics stands for.

It's from the Latin "to finish" hence its on after the Olympics finishes
I thought it meant alongside, next to, similar. Variations of that.

I think the first Paraplegic games competition was for paraplegic patients at Stoke Mandeville in 1948. Dr Guttman said he could see the paraplegic games becoming the PARAplegic oLYMPICS one day, and someone made a portmanteau out of the two words.

The prefix "para" means "alongside" generally, so that works well since the intent has become for the two games to run alongside each other.

I never knew Kings Cross station had a platform 0 👀
So does Leeds, the 18 platforms there are numbered 0 to 17 (discounting all the As and Bs etc on the longer ones that allows 2 trains on the same platform at once)?

Without checking I'd imagine that they built the original platforms from 1 outwards, then reckoned they needed another platform but didn't have the room to expand past the highest number? So extended out the other way from Platform 1 as a result, calling the new one Platform 0.

I could be completely wrong of course🤣

It's pretty much that but it's also to do with signalling and the software required to run it. Renumbering all the platforms would be a major job whereas numbering the new platform as 0 makes things much more straightforward. There's quite a number of platforms zero these days:

Anyone know what the ‘T’ celebration means that Jones and Rogers were throwing out after Jones goal?

I now need to know if there's a station with a platform minus 1 👀
