Take a meter reading today...

They'd get screwed for doing that, it's the kind of thing that people say like "brown envelopes at the planning meeting" that doesn't really actually happen. It's more because websites are meant to handle a set load of users and every outlet in the country is telling people to do this today so capacity is overloaded
Well I bet they won't extend the deadline because of their shjt infrastructure

They don't need to extend the deadline and it isn't shjt infrastructure

It's a bit like if everyone going to the Chelsea's game turned up 1 minute before kickoff and expect to all get through the turnstiles, served at the bar and instantly seated.

They've got enough infrastructure to deal with all of their customers but not most of them at once. You would almost never need to and to do so would be massively expensive

If you don't provide a reading it's not as simple as you're paying that amount for an extra month or anything, they will estimate it, some providers take an average some even factor in weather data to guess how much you used. For some people giving a reading will work out more expensive than using an estimate.

At least we have wind farms and solar panels to keep the bills down :cautious: :cautious:
Wind is renewable but the cost of gathering it is not, I think it's something like 1-1.5m per turbine. As our wind generation went up, this added around £18 to bills to cover installation and maintenance. Still worth doing but there is a lot of assumption that by building wind and solar we can all have cheap bills and even get a rebate, chances are bills go up. Not as much as with gas lately obviously though

Never have any trouble logging in to my Shell Energy account to submit readings but today…… finding it virtually impossible. Funny that.🙁

if you can't get logged in, try their app.

It's just because literally everyone is trying to do the same thing cos it's on TV/radio/everyone is sharing it on social media etc

Take a photo of it with the date and time displayed if you can't give a reading and send it over tomorrow or later today

No joy on that either, Croc O shoite Company, all in it together.

Anyone with Octopus has until midnight on Saturday apparently as their prices aren’t increasing till then (or so I am told)

My smart meter just shows blank for price of gas and electric at present. All the other readings work strangely enough.
BG are sending out text message alerts to customers and asking them to record the meter readings that way if the app is not working. I assume they will add them as the load comes down from everyone trying to submit them at the same time.

Your smart meter is in the cupboard, you're referring to your in home device - IHD- your supplier will need to send an update to it your meter to show the new tariff details but the meter knows what you have used and when. Once the update comes through the ihd will see it, and update the costs.

wel like I said end of the day you're talking very little difference between one done today or tomorrow and if you don't do one it will be estimated anyway based on history so not the end of the world

They're not in it together, they will only communicate if there is an issue or supplier
etc. they've obviously not colluded to make websites not work over a couple of quid when the fines for doing so would dwarf any savings. I managed to log in earlier and check my readings just fine

Give it a few months and they will be bragging about the profit they have made, while people either keep warm or go without food. Going back to the 70's and coin meters.
