Tavernier in the oppositions box

For me, this is one of the areas of Tav's game that if he improves, will notch him up to an exceptional young talent. He seems to have the intelligence to be in the right areas at the right times, however even going back to last season I found his composure in the oppositions box frustrating and he often fires a shot off without giving it much thought or lifting his head.

Jones's assist yesterday was a great example of just taking that extra touch to weigh up the options.

Has anyone recognised this?

His biggest issues are a) keeping fit and b) not trusting his right foot. He has to work harder to get a clear shot with his left foot, because defenders know he massively favours it. He needs to work hard on his right and give defenders a much bigger problem.

You are right though he has the ability, and physical and mental abilities to be an exceptional player. Just needs to tweak a few things.

He's a decent finisher generally, but he did miss a few last season. Regarding his shot he fired over on saturday he had to get his shot off before the block came in from the defender who was flying across, i'm not sure that one was lack of composure, although he was obviously disappointed he didn't hit the target. It would be nice if he had the simple lay off available a little more rather than needing to beat yet another man after he's got into the box.

i Can see your point, but it’s marginal. The one he ballooned over the bar, yes. The shot he hit back to the near post would’ve beaten the keeper, much like Wilson’s did, had it not been for a great block by the defender. That showed up Bola’s defending more than Tav’s profligacy

It’s not a huge issue, but a bit more composure in certain situations will take him from a top prospect to an established Premier League name. Warnock has said he will be in the Premier League next year whether we are or not. I fully agree. He could probably make the step up now and not embarrass himself.

I'd say finishing on both feet and composure are needing a bit of work. He's never scored more than three has he? If he keeps fit I'll be disappointed if he doesn't double that this season with his energy and ability.

His shot over the bar demonstrated the difference between good and great. A great player would have looked like he had all the time in the world and probably hit the target.

I think bm raises a good point about being one footed but I am not sure how much you can work on that. People naturally prefer their dominant side to different levels. Look at Ravanelli he was so one footed but I suspect his left was so dominant it wouldn't matter how much he worked on his right.

You’re not going to get to the point of being equally good on either side unless you start very young, but you can improve your weaker foot significantly if you’re prepared to put the work in. Giggs and Downing are good examples of left footers who did it.

Probably starting very young is a big part of it but I know my wife who is left handed can use either hand quite well I am very very right handed and right footed.

I'm amazed how many professional footballers are so one footed. In my twenties, I practised with my left foot until I was proficient enough to pass and shoot with it. I would obviously never take a free kick or corner with it but didn't think twice about using if needed in open play. It made a massive difference.
I tried the same theory on my left hand for darts and pool with less success!

Downing certainly brought his left foot down to the level of his swinger during his golden-handshake

Footballers spend masses of time training and practicing. Taking a chance that Tav got to win the game is either in your armoury or not. Ballooning the ball over the bar is why he's still on the fringes of a Championship side.
Sad to say it, but it's a fact and these chances need to be taken in a promotion side. Just think of how more miserable that Fulham manager would have been if they'd lost 1-2.

He’s not on the fringes of a championship side. He starts every game when he isn’t injured. He’s probably our best player besides fry

I think it demonstrated a player that was a bit raw and out of match practice. I hope he can get a run together. He does seem to take some rough tackles at times.

I agree with the 2 posts after yours. He isn't a fringe player and he is 22 so still learning his craft.

Possibly, as I said above he is 22 and will get better. I think in another year he will be a decent PL player and may go on to play at the top end of the pl
