The elephant in the room - Man City ffp

The FA finally confirmed that a date has now been set for the Man City hearing but realistically just what will happen.

In light of the forest and Everton news just how can the FA survive this with any credibility if they do fudge the Man City issue.

I think it will go something like this.

Dear Manchester City,
We understand you have breached the rules.
We therefore intend to issue a huge points deduction.

But if they did the implications for the rest we huge.

It’s such a farcical issue that it could end the FA as we know it, how could it possibly continue with any credibility.

The majority of charges will be dismissed because they are "failure to disclose" and "failure to cooperate" rather than actual breaches (103 of the 115). The others will be argued that guidelines weren't clear at the time and practices have changed since the rules became more concrete (around sponsor funding etc).

The PL only recently introduced the rules that hearings and punishments must be carried out within 12 months which is why the City ones can take so long. Everton also admitted their breaches where City are denying they have done anything wrong.

I think the worst case scenario for city is points deductions either this season or next. They can't retrospectively remove title wins from them as that isn't one of the punishments. All those breaches have allowed City to become a dominant force so a season of not winning the title will be a small enough price to pay for being able to establish themselves as the club they are now. Of course, they could have so many points deducted that they are relegated but the PL won't kill that cash cow so it is unlikely. They'd be back within a year anyway.

I thought it was under the fa umbrella hence our 3 pt issue.

I don't know how that worked at the time. I just know this is a PL issue rather than one conducted by the FA. In the same way Derby were fighting against the EFL rather than the FA.

If you read the PL statement at the time of the charges the FA isn't mentioned once. The rules were made by the PL and the FA don't have any input on them as you have to remember the PL clubs own the Premier League.

I expect a huge fine at best, with no impact on their past titles.

Might be a minor points deduction if they have the bottle.

I agree on this being the likely outcome.

Points deduction and massive fine. Which they can easily absorb both, write this season off if it comes to it - slap on the wrist - and just crack on like nothing has happened.

How were Everton docked points first before City when City were charged before them?
As I mentioned above, the FA introduced new rules that hearings/punishments must be done within 12 months only recently. It was after charging City so those rules don't apply. It's also a lot more complex than the Everton case because Everton complied, admitted they were guilty, and it was a single breach.

TalkSPORT saying no question this will end in relegation at least if it’s proved.

Damning stuff

That hinges on their blatant refusal to co-operate.

I actually think we're all being a bit cynical. I DO think they will get a 'heavy' punishment that will equate to 'clean up your act' and maybe set them back a season or two (and fully open up the title race for a few years, benefitting the PL brand).

But I don't think they'll touch their 7 PL titles, or last season's treble, which will have arguably been acquired via cheating.

A sort of 'keep most people happy most of the time' approach.
