The film "control " ian curtis

My thoughts (as someone who has not seen the film).

I’m a huge fan of NO even though I sometimes find Bernard Sumner’s vox and lyrics a bit clumsy. It’s not often you can say that a bass player is such an integral part of a group but I genuinely feel that was the case with Peter Hook. His sound and skills essentially made the band.

I’ve never seen NO (I’ve no idea why) but honestly wish I’d seen them when he was at the helm.

Interesting to read about the JD front cover with the ‘drummer boy’ too.

The band’s names have always had a ‘dark’ touch to them. First ‘Warsaw’, then ‘Joy Division’ (apparently terminology for a Nazi ‘prostitution quarter’) and now ‘New Order’.

For what it’s worth, I am not a fan of JD in the slightest but do find their sound and influence intriguing.

They were also Stiff Kittens for one gig, which is a bit morbid

I only recently learned that Monaco / what do you want from me song was Peter hook

Most my friends would know love will tear us apart but only as either a cover or a song they've heard, probably wouldn't know who joy division are. They would definitely know new order

It's ironic, because Hooky is a much better singer than Bernard. The only reason Bernard was chosen as lead singer (and very reluctantly) was that he could sing and play guitar at the same time, and Hooky couldn't.

Imagine how New Order would have sounded without Peter Hook's distinctive bass? I've often argued that Peter Hook's bass playing WAS New Order's sound and without him, it sounds like a shallow imitation of what they once were.

They made Music Complete without him and it’s a damn fine album.

The Steve Coogan biopic of Tony Wilson - 24 hour party people is worth a watch too.

Worth a watch in that it's entertaining, but factually it's a little bit lacking.

My biggest gripe is the line "This is Manchester, we do things differently here" which has been attributed to Wilson. But he never said it, it was written specifically for the film, yet it's become like a gospel to every hipster wine bar and TV production in the Northern Quarter to use. The same as the worker bee, which I dont think I saw in my 4 years of Uni in Manchester but again you cant move for it now.

My biggest takeout from the film was not realising how much like Alan Partridge Tony Wilson was until Steve Coogan played him that way. Then I just couldn't not see it whenever I heard Wilson speak.

Glad he didn't approach the Saville biopic in the same way though.

I grew up in Manchester in the late 60s and return regularly and absolutely the worker bee wasn't a thing in the last century. that said the worker bee has been a symbol for 150 odd years, and you can see them on old buildings if you look. it's just that it was never used as it seems to do now on almost all marketing publicity for the city.

Re the film I didn't mind artistic licence with facts. It doesnt bother me that much as long as its a good film.

PS The film that did bother me with continuity errors was that awful film from a couple of years ago about the pensioner who bussed from John Ogroats to Lands End which was full of nonsense and geography liberties.

Watch 24 Hour Party People and then read "24 Hour Party People: What the Sleeve Notes Never Tell You" by Tony Wilson, it's a great accompaniment to the film.

Also look out for Tony with a tiny cameo in the film as the director who cuts all of Tony's monologuing about Boethius and the wheel during the scene of him hosting "Wheel of Fortune"

Back when they were called Warsaw they played the Rock garden in Middlesbrough, it's the only recording of a whole gig from them as Warsaw. Peter Hook owned the only copy for years but then it was stolen and bootlegged.

Aye, they played the Rock Garden as Warsaw but never as Joy Division, they had a gig there cancelled in 1980 shortly before Ian's death though.

They were also supposed to play at Coatham Bowl in Redcar in 1978 but that got cancelled as well!
