Just reading a number of men incl the likes of Knopfler, Sting, Stephen Fry have signed a letter saying they will resign from the club if the vote to allow women is not passsed next Tuesday.

Just wondering what has taken them so long to say/do the right thing?
Anyone any idea?

Because it's steeped in tradition and ran by a load of old duffers.

I thought Fry was a Groucho Club regular (which is the only club I'd consider joining if I could find a nominee and seconder, which I can't) rather than The Garrick.

hmmm, I guess women can't - currently - become members as it shows they are allowed to enter the building.

thought having a gmail account for a contact looks a bit cheap & unprofessional..

What is the Garrick Club?

Do I merit a whoosh, as I've never heard of it? Is it like the Bongo (but with fewer ladies)?

In the 1980s/90s Jeremy Paxman was blackballed and kicked out of the Garrick.
The Garrick pub, off Stockton High Street, issued a statement saying he would always be welcome for a pint at their establishment.
Sure enough, next to time Paxman was on Teesside to do Question Time he popped in for a pint.

Probably because nobody has proposed it previously.
