The National

A horse is likely to die today that would not die if this race wasn't taking place. Two horses are already dead at this meeting. 60+ since the year 2000 at the Aintree festival alone. And for what? Profit? That's barbaric in my eyes.
Millions of sheep, pigs, cows, chickens die every single week for profit. Strange to focus on this where the animals are looked after so well

Millions of sheep ,pigs, cows, chickens die every day for food for humans to eat. Horses race for humans enjoyment and of course profit.

The horses are looked after and kept in 100x better conditions than the animals that are bread for food

I thought this thread was going to be about the band, not the race. I already had a bet on with Nobby, but he's on the naughty step for the moment. I said that a horse would win. Did a horse win? Did I win the bet? Does Nobby owe me even more money now? It would be lovely if a giraffe or an antelope won it one year, but it's always a bloody horse. It's boring.

Have a good day anyway Sherlock and I am sure we both hope for a safe race, but if an accident happens and a horse is lost it will be a sad, sad day, not a savagely cruel, primitive and unsophisticated one….. in my eyes.
I don't doubt the horses are well looked after in the stables. Stable staff love horses, without doubt.

In my experience owners and jockeys are, in the main, utterly ruthless people though. Seeing horses getting thrashed (even with new whip rules) in the closing straight is not edifying. Seeing jockeys walking away from mortally injured horses as though their time has been wasted is sickening. Owners who want either prize money or insurance money if the horse doesn't make it is even worse.

The whole thing is repulsive, even if horses in stables are well looked after.

Your point about horses not racing if they don't want to must be a joke. They just get hit harder.

Your view is your view, I have said some humans are awful, people mistreat dogs, cats all living creatures, it is terrible they exist in all walks of life, maybe in every parish. Many horses, like many animals, including domestic pets would not be bred and have any life at all. The one question nobody seems willing to answer is: Is it better to have no life at all than experience some life where you are looked after well, even if that ultimately ends in a sad way?

I am more angered at seeing the state of some horses on roadsides, or dogs and cats living in squalor, or chickens in battery cages whose eggs are bought by the food industry and served in your favourite bars and restaurants, but what you don’t know is ok for some. 🤷‍♂️

Edit, plenty of horses have refused to race it shows as a letter R in their form. Several of the fallers today, continued jumping without a jockey, why if they did not like it? Sadly it looks likely their has been fatalities though, which will add to the protestors beliefs. You could argue if those protestors had not intervened the race is not held up and therefore inevitably run differently and none of those horses die or maybe different ones do instead etc etc, it becomes a different race. It is always sad and they do look into all accidents, their causation and what if anything could be done to avoid it in future. I think the sheer number of horses is perhaps a significant issue and numbers should be reduced, it would lower risks imho.

Another fatality during the race, but as long as some people had a day out and some made a few quid 😡

This horse was alive and well this morning, and is now dead.
