The new Dark Side of the Moon album…

I'm listening to it now as a result of seeing this post and I'm not the least bit impressed by it. He's not singing but speaking the tunes with some narrative trying to emphasise a concept album I presume.

Classics should never be messed with as they represent a slice of time.

Zappa did it with the Mothers' We're Only In It For The Money, originally recorded in 1967. He was digitising his back catalogue to transfer to CD some time in the early 80s I believe and claimed the original acetates were too damaged so remixed it.

I bought the remixed CD to replace my long lost original vinyl and was really disappointed. OK, it was great to finally hear the backwards bits (censored by MGM without Zappa's knowledge or agreement). The production was garbage and so obviously using 80s techniques and instruments as opposed to the original. Like a Rick Ashley version :)

I've since managed to acquire an original.

To my ears it is cleaner (as you would expect with digitized music) but sterile. DSoTM the only album I still have as an original apart from Radiohead stuff sounds better on my Rega Planar 2 record player than this version. Something is lost in the translation - a warmth and openness. I understand how digital sound works having done a lot of IT Telephony with some of the big players and it sounds less engaging musically as if the top and bottom frequencies are clipped, that or I just prefer the analogue sound.

I always wanted a Rega Planar 2 but never could afford one. I've only got a crap USB record deck and a couple of USB tape decks so my vinyl is only for show these days.

Got this used by my son's mate who moved to Norway and wanted a fast sale. Cracking it of kit but cost me 1/3 of the new price - he could have asked for more but mates/dads rate.

I've done my duty and listened to it all the way through. I wasn't expecting much so wasn't disappointed :)

A couple of decent passages/versions of the original songs like breath and time would sort of stand up as reasonable alternatives of the originals but apart from that it's pretty crap, poor instrumentation and Waters hasn't got the voice to sing any of it properly. The extra dialogue he adds over the top of half the album is self indulgent nonsense.

If I was going to compare it to a Zappa album it'd be Thing Fish. probably Zappa's worst album where he takes great source material and ruins it all.

Just realised that the sentence I'd written under that above seems to have gone missing - it went something like...

Waters has taken liberties with the songs with his imposition of additional discourse which spoils the flow anyway.
