The next World Cup format sounds horrendous

1986 and 1990 both had 24 teams but went straight to a round of 16, with 4 best third placed teams qualifying, think Dutch may have been third in our group in 1990, we might even have been in third in 1986? (Ironically, a world cup the likes of Shilton think we would have won if not for the hand of God!) Surely similar format with 48, so 12 groups of 4 then round of 32 etc.....?

Let all 200 teams in. One massive pre-qualifying round to get the likes of San Marino out, then straight shoot out for 128 teams, top seeds v bottom all the way. Same format for the 50 teams in the Euros. (y)
256 teams in 2 groups of 128. Each team plays every other team in the group over years 1,2 and 3. Top 64 in each group progress to straight knockout in year 4. Final to be played in Sultan of Brunei's back garden.
To increase the number of entrants to 256 some regions may have to secede from their current countries, e.g Catalonia and Cornwall. Obviously, all club football above league 1 (or equivalent) would need to be suspended for the duration.

All for this especially if it means I no longer have to support England and can support the People's Republic of Yorkshire ;)

48 World Cup teams?

8 groups of 6.. the top two teams from each group go through..

Why not have a proper World Cup where it’s hosted over servers countries?

Last 16 at
Ireland, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Greece, Romania, Burkina Faso, Slovakia, Finland
Quarter final at Venezuela, Bosnia, Panama & Ghana
Semi Final at Iceland & Slovenia
Final in Jamaica

Just bung the top 48 countries in
1-8
9-16
17-24
25-32
33-40
41-48

Hold the group stages at the country lowest ranked in the group.

Group A would be 1st, 9th, 17th, 25th, 33rd, 41st
Brazil, Portugal, Columbia, Sweden, Russia & Canada

B 2,10,18,26,34,42 Belgium, Denmark, Senegal, Poland, Austria, Norway
C 3,11,19,27,35,43 Argentina, Germany, Wales, Ukraine, Czech Rep, Cameroon
D 4,12,20,28,36,44 France, Croatia, Iran, Korea, Hungary, Ecuador
E 5,13,21,29,37,45 England, Mexico, Serbia, Chile, Algeria, Turkey
F 6,14,22,30,38,46 Italy, Uruguay, Morocco, Tunisia, Australia, Mali

Trouble is, you'll get quite a few teams with nothing to play for after 3 games.

Some teams won't compete as hard as a result. There will also be a few matches between teams who can't progress.

don't bother me, probably will make us more likely to get into knock out stages each time with how its seeded,

amazed at people saying its all about the money, well duh thats the point of mainstream sports in reality lol

Three games now and you win the first two.. you can rest for the third

The same could be said for all top teams in the group stages

What ever happened to sporting glory? Qatar were goosed pretty much straight away.. nothing to play for now.

The worst aspect of three team groups is that you cannot have the deciding games for the groups played simultaneously so you will get teams playing out meaningless 0-0 draws that let both participants through. At least with the current format with some teams already "out" they have to play teams who will want to win to either finish top or to actually make it through.

I don't see a problem with bringing more teams into the WC but they need to make sure that the format can be as competitive as possible. Perhaps have a format with four team groups with only the top 16 progressing from 12 groups to avoid the dead games.

For those that don’t know

FIFA in 2017 voted to expand the 2026 World Cup from 32 teams to 48 teams. It will consist of 16 groups of three, with the top two teams in each group advancing to a round of 32.

Who knows maybe even Scotland might qualify
Ridiculous, they may as well put a full season aside for that world cup then, it'll take forever

Slightly off topic, but I have floated on here the idea of getting rid of the champs league and having a proper european FA cup style competition. All top flight leagues in all european countries qualify. A 1 leg knock out competition.

55 nations x an average of 18 teams = 990 teams. Have a qualifying round to whittle down to 512 teams based on UEFA coefficient, then, then rounds 1-6, quarter, semi and final. Max 10 games for any one side.....that'll stop the big european teams complaining about too many fixtures for their superstar players.
