Can you think of many players who we missed out on who turned out to be decent?

The only one who really springs to my mind is Forlan, who Man Utd considered a flop but I still think would have done well at a smaller club at the time.

Still, at least we bagged Guediora the midfield general in that illustrious transfer window.

At the time it was regarded as a bit too much to pay on this message board.

One big, expensive bullet we certainly swerved was Waghorn. No wonder the Derby chairman had such a problem with us after we went into an auction with them for that donkey.
 
Always pains me to think of Karanka crying on about not getting this guy and Bojan, and then turning his nose up about Bamford in that press conference near the end of his time at boro. He'd got the best one but couldn't see it.

As I remember it the fee was agreed and he was coming to us until one of Hull's centre backs got a bad injury so they pulled the plug on the deal.
 
Robbo was rumoured to want Kanchelskis didnt he end up signing for Everton?

I seem to remember we thought £6m was too much for Ivan Toney, then the next season he was sold to Brentford for £10m. Ah yes, the good old days of our previous recruitment dept.

It was more than a rumour. He had a straight choice between us and Everton and I think he chose Everton so he didn't have to move house. We tried to buy Mark Hughes at the same time, but he chose Chelsea.
So then we bought Barmby, after Alan Sugar tried to ridicule us.
"I don't know what it is meant by money in Middlesbrough...."etc.
 
Jese was at rock cliffe and karanka was desperate to sign him… so much so we literally blindsided most other targets. We had snodgrass in the bag and then last minute West Ham blew us out of the water. So we ended up with what we did. It was the end of line. Players speaking Spanish sat with each other, karanka speaking Spanish, Fabio crying as he wanted to go back to Brazil as his Mrs and kids had already gone… shambles
 
Grenet, and his brothers. Never pulled up any trees anywhere they went. On the other hand, Trevor Sinclair has been mentioned many times on this forum so we must have been close to getting him at some point?
