It was three days after his first match in charge that Michael Carrick took his "team" to Hull City`s MKM Stadium on the first Tuesday in November. He had literally just got his coat on the peg behind his door, when he set off on the road. Boro had won only one game away all season up till then: 4-1 at Wigan - with Leo bravely holding the team together.

It was a spirited performance, like letting a spring loose: the lads played with a kind of fluency and self expression we hadnt seen all season. Akpom scored from an exquisite pass by Tommy Smith. Jones [going down the wing- a ha!] was out wide and played an important role dragging Hull defenders all over the place.

Cyrus Christie [remember him?] levelled in the second half, but after that the Carrick Copter went into overdrive and minutes later Darragh Lenihan had the ball in the Tigers net.
Smiles all around.

No one could predict that this was to be the start of a rocket ride up the table to the dizzy heights of potential automatic promotion. Our fans that night drowned out any noise from the Tigers end. It was a pulsating match. Ten minutes before the end and Giles sealed the deal. 3-1 Boro!

Although Carrick had just started his first Head Coach position since leaving Man United - he had started to spread his magic dust over a group of players who had - untill then - looked a busted flush. He hadnt had time to imbue the lads with his sense of calm, perseverance and determination, but it was clear the shoots of success had already begun to take root.

The core of the starting line-up has become familiar. We have, of course, added Archer and Ramsey, but with a few tweaks and variations on a theme.

Starting Line - Up: Steffen. Smith. Lenihan. Fry. Giles. Howson. Jones. McGree. Hackney. Akpom. Forss.

Subs: Hoppe. Crooks. Mowatt. Roberts. McNair. Dijksteel. Muniz.

Three valuable points! Boro were still only a point above 22nd place. But we were never to visit the depths of the Championship relegation zone again. The Red Revolution had begun. (y)

Carrick spoke to BBC Tees after the match:

"I'm pleased for the boys and the feeling and the lift that will give them. They deserved that for the week they've given me and how they've gone about it.

"I thought we played some really good football at times. We'd like to do more of it for longer periods but there were definitely glimpses we can take positives from.

"But all in all, a really good night with lots of parts of the performance that we can be proud of."

Boro v Hull

Michael Carrick has always said we have to focus on ourselves and cut out the "noise" of media speculation and hype. Never a man to lose his cool - even when we have rarely performed to plan. Every time we have experienced a "set back" we have bounced back in style: the latest, of course, being the thrashing of Norwich City in the pouring Teesside rain! We looked back to our superb best - with neat passing, pace and incisive movement off the ball - we carved them up like a Bernard Matthews Turkey!

Hull City
, appear to be getting back onto an even keel, since the change of ownership and appointment of Liam Rosenior as Head Coach, last November. Liam, son of Leroy Rosenior, he played five years in a Tigers shirt from 2010 to 2015. At 38, he is amongst the young crop of up-coming Managers in the Championship. At Derby County, he was Assistant Manager to Wayne Rooney until new owners brought in Paul Warne.

Tonight is another "Cup Final" as we focus on taking three points to sustain our place in the play-offs. Its probably realistic to disregard any chance we may have had to grab second spot from the "Cloggers" of Bramall Lane. Luton are putting up a spirited fight - there`s always a team which comes up on the inside in the Championship. They deserve a lot of credit - although our upcoming game at Kenilworth Road will hopefully stop them in their tracks. But, today - "we start from scratch" [Michael Carrick] and go again. We cant take anything for granted.

A credit to Carrick and his team needs to be given for the way we have managed "injuries! to key players this season. Apart from Matt Clarke and Darnell Fisher, we havent had any major injury concerns. A few knocks here and there in a long Championship season is not easy to manage. We will see the team sheet tonight to see if Forss and Ramsey are OK and also hope young Dael is ready. Either way - the contribution of Mowatt and Jones against Norwich shows we have options - well up for the challenge. It was particularly pleasing seeing Isaiah Jones full of confidence and back to his old self, in that 20 minute cameo against Norwich.

Better not book any weddings, parties or over-time until the Wembley Final date is passed.

Top Scorers - Hull City

Tigers have averaged just over a goal-per-game this season with 13 wins, 14 draws and 15 defeats. I cant find any other club in bthe Championship with that sequence of results! They have scored a credible 48 goals but shipped 57 so far.

Oscar Estupinan - 13 plus 1 assist.
The 26 year old Columbian made his first International appearance in 2022 and joined Hull from Portugese club Vitoria de Guiumaraes.

Ozan Tufan - 7 [no assists]
Turkish midfielder was signed from Fenerbahce in 2022, where he made 133 appearances, scoring 18 goals.

Regan Slater - 5 plus 4 assists.

Now 27, began his Senior career at Sheffield United, but only made one appearance for them. Via loan spells at Carlisle, Scunthorpe and Hull, he signed permanently in 2022.

Jacob Greaves - 4 plus 2 assists.
The 22 year old defender is reportedly on Boro`s "wish list". A local lad - began his career at Hull in 2019. Has made a total of 125 appearances for Hull [so far] which included a loan spell at Cheltenham Town in the 2019 / 20 season

Cyrus Christie - 3 plus 1 assist.
Now 30. The much travelled ex Coventry, Derby, Boro and Fulham defender, joined Hull in 2022. Of note: he signed for Boro at the same time as Jonny Howson in 2017!
