The poor kid killed by a dog

Dog owners, in my experience, don't understand just how much their beloved family member can affect other people. They are also uniformly surprised when their dog does something they've just spent 5 minutes telling you it never does.
I don't mind dogs and i can see how they make great pets. My wife however is both allergic and scared stiff of them so it boils my **** when they come bounding up to her if she's out running and the owners make no attempt (or a pathetic one) to restrain their dog.

I also think the status of the dog has risen so much in recent years that saying you don't like them is almost taboo. Say you don't like kids on our local Facebook group and no-one bats an eye lid but woe betide anyone who says anything against dogs or their owners.

Yes same with my littlest. Even if they’re not dangerous he doesn’t want them anywhere near him, until he gets to know them on his terms. He’s 2. Some owners respect this, some don’t. The ones who don’t have had a few mouthfuls from me and the wife (who grew up with dogs herself).

As an owner of 2 dogs, 1 of which was attacked and had her chest ripped open by another dog a few months ago I must admit I've had nothing but anxiety about dog attacks ever since. I don't know what the answer is, I just know I'm absolutely fed up of dog owners. I feel like 90% of dog owners have no idea about a dogs needs and think they can just do whatever the hell they like.

We recently rescued a whippet cross about a month ago that was taken from a welfare situation, 6 of them kept in cages in their own faeces for their entire lives, full of fleas and severely underweight. She is the sweetest dog ever but is reactive when she sees other dogs, we are 99% sure she just wants to meet them but because she had no socialisation as a pup she has no idea how to deal with it, goes over her threshold really quickly and loses her mind but we're working on it. We're having to walk both of them at 6am because I'm sick of other dogs just sprinting up to my dogs off lead and owners thinking that's alright, "they're friendly!" is all you hear.

I know this is slightly off topic but felt like I just needed to get that off my chest because I'm filled with dread every time we walk them at the moment.

I feel the same mate. My 2 are always on a lead outside the house - and I don't like other people's dogs running up to them off a lead not knowing what they're going to do

A vet told me that a dog on a lead is more likely to be aggressive/ defense if approached by another running up to it.
He said it is due to the dog ( on lead ) not having the ability to run away / potentially defend itself properly/ protective of it's owner .
Made sense to me.

All dogs should be on a lead outside the house , whatever breed

And I'm not asking the obvious dog haters to like my post because I disagree with a lot they say

If your dog attacks someone outside you are responsible - and should be charged. If your dog is off a lead outside your house and kills someone you should be charged with manslaughter

Banning of certain breeds is possibly an answer, but certainly having to muzzle them outside should be looked at in my opinion
Totally agree. I use to have a shih tzu who despite being small and looking cute was very aggressive. He couldn't be trusted not on a lead. One day he got out of the garden and bite someone on the foot. I took him to training, had him assessed and was told he was now considered a dangerous dog. Sadly he bit someone else despite all the training, so the decision was made to put him to sleep.

He was a lovely dog with me and the immediate family but could be totally out of control around others.

But the dog on the lead is under some control, whereas the one running up to it is not - and also cannot be easily restrained to stop it attacking people/kids/other dogs

Sorry to hear that Chappy. Sounds horrendous and traumatising.

My father in law has a Show Cocker. He’s daft as a brush and a complete ball of energy. He gets walked twice a day. As he tends to do the same routes he’s got to know other dogs and their owners on walks.

He knows the ones to stay clear of and his dog has now got other dog “buddies” that he’ll often play with off the lead when bumping into them.

Hardly a month goes by where he doesn’t end up in arguments with other owners.

The other month he was walking down Acklam road and a woman had a dog on a longer leash. As her Dog approached it growled and went to bite. He a managed to pull his dog back behind himself so no damage done (thankfully didn’t attack him).

The woman walked past. Didn’t even acknowdge what happened or apologise. So he turned back round and basically said the dog needs a muzzle if he’s that aggressive. She just turned round and give him a mouth full of profanity and basically told him to mind his own business. Not one *** given. That could have easily been a kid.

Unfortunately society as a whole is becoming more selfish and self absorbed. Too many people don’t give a ****. Boils my pish. A lot of people shouldn’t have dogs.

I was in Albert Park with my young daughter in the summer hols. A couple walked past with a dog off the lead and it was the biggest scariest thing I’d ever seen. I’m a dog lover and have always had dogs, but I had a right go at the bloke. All I got back was it was a lovely dog and wouldn’t hurt a fly. People are so stupid.

It’s not just scary dogs though, even the ones who just steal food out of your kids’ hands etc. Some owners are mortified and apologetic, some just act like you’re the one with the problem for not loving this random dog in the park you have no attachment to. You briefly just feel like nutting them sometimes.

I totally agree. I only have a pug and the worst that could happen is you get licked to death, but I would always apologize if it jumped up at anyone.

What type of dog is it? I've seen the pic on BBC website and it looks evil.

A bloke near me has 2 similar dogs and when he takes them on the fields all the other people disappear. They are huge and I'd say not exactly under control. Scary
No dog is evil. It looks hell scary though. I have a lovely cocker spaniel who is soft as anything but I'd never leave him with children or even let him go up to a child he didn't know.

I have the same problem walking my dog, other owners huge dogs bounding over and knocking him over etc... just playing of course but the owners just laugh!

I've recently started to walk mine along the stray in Redcar as I hate taking her down the seafront during the summer as it just gets too busy.

Only been there a handful of times but already seen a number of dogs off the lead running in and out of the main road because the owner has lost control of them. We actively try and avoid dogs walking towards us as mine doesn't particularly care for other dogs (gets more excited at getting strokes from humans).

Both of my step daughters have XL bullies. Can only speak of my oldest step daughter as I don't see much of the younger one. No falling out she's just a bit of a quiet one. Their mother died last year and the oldest got an XL bully about 6 months ago. She has 3 kids and having the dog has brought them all back together as a family again after the tragic loss of their mam and nana. Its given them a focus and something to take their minds of the sad things. He's a lovely dog and they adore him. Now they have the prospect of him being seized by the police and losing a valued family member. Banning breeds just isn't right. Bring back licensing to own a dog and the police should visit their homes to assess if they are capable of of owning them. Some dogs can be used as weapons. Their ownership should be strictly limited. I have a chihuahua inherited from my sadly deceased wife. He's a bigger **** than most of these dogs but he's so small he gets away with it. Down to her cos she spoiled him so much. He hates walks with me because he's kept on a tight lead and isn't allowed to be a **** like he was with his mam
