Championship Football Saturday: Its Back!
1697818434582.png

It doesnt seem just under two weeks ago, when we came away from Wearside with smiles as wide as the Transporter Bridge, having thrashed the **** off a team on the former Durham coast with a superb display. Its not in Carrick`s manner to gloat, but he did comment in his Media Conference v Brum on Thursday about the ["Its Not a Derby"] Derby:

1697818569886.png

"It was a good win, the boys played well and it was a fantastic performance" [Said with a wry smile].

He was asked a question about how he felt Sam Greenwood had managed his day - being a Sunlun boy an that. Carrick praised his maturity, his professionalism and his focus on the game. Not lettng the ocassion get to him. He emphasised it wasnt just Sam`s [Boro`s] opening goal, but his overall performance which impressed him:

I thought he was fantastic for the goal...but I thought his overall performance, the way he handled the day, was a real credit to him.

Football is a "funny old game" and its probably none more so than today`s encounter when Carrick comes up against Wayne Rooney in his first game as the new Manager of Birmingham City. Carrick and Rooney were team mates together - and for over ten years - in glittering United and England careers. Wayne, of course, is back from the States having first ground his teeth at Derby County. That was certainly a baptism of fire.

Its hard to comprehend sometimes, that Wayne Rooney made 120 [!] Senior Appearances for England and scored 53 goals! Amazing. Carrick was asked much about his friendship with his former team - mate and how that could effect tommorrows match: you can imagine Carrick`s calm response. He was focused on the game: the boys are up for it, and he wished Rooney well "after" the game. Carrick acknowledged there would be no complacency after our recent upturn in form, recognising the job done by former Blues Manager John Eustace:

1697818813881.png
[He] Put them in the position they are in the league and last season, I thought, particularly doing a terrific job. We had a tough game against them. Footballs football. When you see someone loose their job its not nice, but on the other hand I`m delighted to see Wayne back".

Regards injuries, Carrick said that Matt Clark continues to train and get back to fitness, Rav VDB has trained with the squad and Riley [he thinks] may not be quite ready for the game. He did, however, give an indication of the state of play:

We`re hopeful. I think we`ll have to see how the game goes. Its probably....too soon for this game. We`ll see when he`s ready to come back.

Its hard not to feel confident, coming back off victories over Bradford, Cardiff, Southampton, Watford and SUNDERLAND. We`ve come a long way from a dismal start, but we`re seeing the results of the hard-work of Carrick, Woody, Grant, Danksy, Tinkler and the rest of the staff - often out of sight. It takes a lot of skill, experience and nouse to manage and create a positive thriving squad, all chomping at the bit to get game time. All growing and developing at different levels. Sharing knowledge between the older heads and the young lads just starting out. Its a long, long season and we all know there will be more downs and ups [This is Boro you know].

Carrick hasnt forgotten how much we are important to each and every game we play and to the players:

The fans are always important to us….to give us that little extra spark, that extra little bit of energy, that little bit of extra feeling. The support in numbers is brilliant and the boys feed off it. So, as always [fans] are just as important as ever.

Just to finish. Carrick was asked by one intelligent reporter what he thought of Wayne Rooney`s "standing in the game".

Sharp and quick as ever, the gaffa replied:

He`s not done bad has he!

Come On Boro.
We can do this!

Wayne Rooney is expecting to have plenty of talent at his disposal versus Middlesbrough.

Blues journey to Teesside on Saturday 21 October, kick-off 3pm, for a Sky Bet Championship match that is the Manager's first following his arrival at the Football Club last week and marks the league campaign's resumption after the second Men's international break of the 2023/24 season.
Since the 37-year-old's appointment, he has undertaken a series of training sessions at the Birmingham City Elite Performance and Innovation Centre with the support of First Team Coaching Staff, Ashley Cole, John O'Shea, Carl Robinson and Pete Shuttleworth.
This time has allowed him to take a closer look at the Birmingham City squad ahead of travelling to the Riverside and the Gaffer has clearly been impressed by what he has seen.

Speaking to BluesTV on Thursday afternoon, Rooney reported no new injury concerns as he provided a positive update on player availability.
"We are still waiting for [Juninho] Bacuna to come back [from international duty], he will be back tomorrow. The players have given me a difficult decision to pick a starting XI which is great, it is always healthy and they are fighting for places. It is all you can ask for as a manager.
"Ethan Laird is probably the closest to being back. We are hoping he will be back in some capacity next week. The other lads are still a few weeks away but Ethan is the one who could potentially be training with us next week."

An added plotline to Saturday's fixture is the reuniting of two former England and Manchester United teammates on the touchline. Rooney and Michael Carrick shared a pitch together on 366 occasions, with no player lining up alongside the Birmingham Manager as many times during his illustrious playing career.

Although Blues' boss made clear that their firm friendship will definitely be parked come the first whistle this weekend.
"At first it will feel a bit strange. But we are both very professional, good friends, but come that 90 minutes we both want to beat each other. I am trying to win for Birmingham and he is trying to win for Middlesbrough.

"It will make for a good game. We will, of course, shake hands and have a chat after the game."

Birmingham City - Top Scorers

Birmingham have jettisoned many of their old stagers and cleared out the deadwood. New owners and new Manager. Many of the players are from wide and far with the emphasis on youth. They are a different outfit to the plodding team we once knew. Expect big things from them this season - after they`ve played us of course!

Juninho Bacuna
3 goals 1 assist
1697824114599.jpeg

Began his career with Groningen in his native Netherlands.
Signed a deal with blues back in 2022 after an unsuccessful spell at Glasgow Rangers.

Siriki Dembele
3 goals
1697824236970.png

Signed in July this year and probably having the best start to a season for a while.
He`s got pace and a real threat.

Jay Stansfield
3 goals
1697824312696.png

A former Grecian youth who is currently on loan from Fulham.
3 goals in 8 games so far is not a bad total for the 20 year old.

Koji Myoshi
2 goals 2 assists
1697824391101.png

Joined Blues in the summer.
At 26, the Japanese born Winger was signed from royal Antwerp.

Lukas Jutkiewicz
2 goals 1 assist
1697824527031.jpeg

He goes on and on! Now 34, its been 9 years since he left the Riverside.
He must be their longest serving player.
Initially signed on loan from Burnley, making it permenant in 2016.

Scott Hogan
2 goals

Now 31 - the much travelled forward has been ever present since 2020.

Might need to use the Trent Navigation and turn left up the Yorkshire Coast from the Humber estuary if this wet stuff keeps coming down.

What is the weather like? Any chance of the game being called off?
I'm 40 miles up the road and it's been dismal for days but seems to be easing off now. Forecast in Boro looks decent though, can't see any problems, although travel to and from might be trickier in some circumstances.

Trent burst its banks and some tributaries north of Newark left parts of the A1 in nearly half a meter in water yday.
They`l stil be plenty of wet stuff coming off the Pennines and other high ground.
