Championship Football Saturday: Its Back!
It doesnt seem just under two weeks ago, when we came away from Wearside with smiles as wide as the Transporter Bridge, having thrashed the **** off a team on the former Durham coast with a superb display. Its not in Carrick`s manner to gloat, but he did comment in his Media Conference v Brum on Thursday about the ["Its Not a Derby"] Derby:
"It was a good win, the boys played well and it was a fantastic performance" [Said with a wry smile].
He was asked a question about how he felt Sam Greenwood had managed his day - being a Sunlun boy an that. Carrick praised his maturity, his professionalism and his focus on the game. Not lettng the ocassion get to him. He emphasised it wasnt just Sam`s [Boro`s] opening goal, but his overall performance which impressed him:
I thought he was fantastic for the goal...but I thought his overall performance, the way he handled the day, was a real credit to him.
Football is a "funny old game" and its probably none more so than today`s encounter when Carrick comes up against Wayne Rooney in his first game as the new Manager of Birmingham City. Carrick and Rooney were team mates together - and for over ten years - in glittering United and England careers. Wayne, of course, is back from the States having first ground his teeth at Derby County. That was certainly a baptism of fire.
Its hard to comprehend sometimes, that Wayne Rooney made 120 [!] Senior Appearances for England and scored 53 goals! Amazing. Carrick was asked much about his friendship with his former team - mate and how that could effect tommorrows match: you can imagine Carrick`s calm response. He was focused on the game: the boys are up for it, and he wished Rooney well "after" the game. Carrick acknowledged there would be no complacency after our recent upturn in form, recognising the job done by former Blues Manager John Eustace:
[He] Put them in the position they are in the league and last season, I thought, particularly doing a terrific job. We had a tough game against them. Footballs football. When you see someone loose their job its not nice, but on the other hand I`m delighted to see Wayne back".
Regards injuries, Carrick said that Matt Clark continues to train and get back to fitness, Rav VDB has trained with the squad and Riley [he thinks] may not be quite ready for the game. He did, however, give an indication of the state of play:
We`re hopeful. I think we`ll have to see how the game goes. Its probably....too soon for this game. We`ll see when he`s ready to come back.
Its hard not to feel confident, coming back off victories over Bradford, Cardiff, Southampton, Watford and SUNDERLAND. We`ve come a long way from a dismal start, but we`re seeing the results of the hard-work of Carrick, Woody, Grant, Danksy, Tinkler and the rest of the staff - often out of sight. It takes a lot of skill, experience and nouse to manage and create a positive thriving squad, all chomping at the bit to get game time. All growing and developing at different levels. Sharing knowledge between the older heads and the young lads just starting out. Its a long, long season and we all know there will be more downs and ups [This is Boro you know].
Carrick hasnt forgotten how much we are important to each and every game we play and to the players:
The fans are always important to us….to give us that little extra spark, that extra little bit of energy, that little bit of extra feeling. The support in numbers is brilliant and the boys feed off it. So, as always [fans] are just as important as ever.
Just to finish. Carrick was asked by one intelligent reporter what he thought of Wayne Rooney`s "standing in the game".
Sharp and quick as ever, the gaffa replied:
He`s not done bad has he!
Come On Boro.
We can do this!
