Its that time again......
"There`s no hiding from it: we need results. I believe we`l get that if we keep doing the right thing and putting in....the performances. We`ve deserved to have a hell of a lot more out of them than we`ve got. Thats why I`m looking forward"
Michael Carrick is under no illusions about the next step in the process of building our new team - get the results we know we can and put points on the board. He was adamant that there is no panic in the squad or the staff to change and chop their approach, simply because results have lead to a very poor start to the season.
With only the one point from 15 so far, Carrick has real belief in his players. He pointed to the new loanees, the quality of those who have been out with their national teams during the International Break and the overall strength in the squad. Carrick would rather be playing games than having to sit out the International Break. But he`s "made the best of it", particularly working with those who arrived at the back end of the transfer window.
Lets not forget, that Carrick has been through the same experiences with different coaches and players over a long career. He went through relegation at West Ham, endured another transitional period at Spurs and saw a huge turn-over in players at Old Trafford. Football is about constant building and rebuilding teams. Nothing has ever stood still and Carrick should know. He also played alongside some of the greats in the England team and coached and played alongside some of the biggest ego`s in football: take, for instance, Ronaldo, Mourinho, Rooney, Giggs, Scholes, Lampard and Gerrard. That experience dovetails into his coaching style and philosophy. It permeats through to all the players and staff. Dont forget he also has the likes of Woodgate who played for Real Madrid and had a burgeoning career with England, unfortunately cut short by injuries. Grant Leadbitter knows our club inside out and has a wealth of experience - definitely one of the best Captain`s we`ve had in recent years.
[Carrick with Woody and Grant taking the lead in training]
Carrick talked of how "proud" he was for Hayden Hackney`s progress at the start of his International career. He also highlighted how those returning from International duty were returning with knowledge and experience they will add to the squad:
Its been a big week for Hayden obviously...a big week for Rav playing two games for Holland U21`s. Great to see that – another big step for Rav and Sammy [Silvera] making his debut for Australia. It shows we`ve got some good players, some good young players……..That in itself shows they are in a good place individually [then] bringing that confidence, that energy back, [that] spring in their step, looking forward to it and being part of the group again. There`s definitely positives to take individually and you can see that when they come back in….[smiles] that little bit taller and a little bit more positive and its fantastic to see.

Taking the positives is really important and Carrick said there is no point saying every thing is fine, when it isnt.
He wasnt just protecting the boys because its his team. He was really genuine about working harder to iron out the rough edges, build on experience and continue doing "the right thing". There was no ambiguity in answer to a question about his work with the squad:
The boys are human beings and have got families and individuals they need to look after as well. We get so desperate for them to perform and [be] robotic, that they should be at their best all the time and it doesn’t always work like that. [Carrick]
Its understandably uncomfortable for all of us that we sit at the bottom of the Championship. Its five games in and we would rather we sat atop the pile. Its irrelevant where we were this time last year or what happened to players in the summer. Its also inappropriate judging the current Managerial, Recruitment and Coaching regime with those of the past. Different times, different financial constraints, a much skewed market created by the likes of Sky - over whom we have no control. There are "big" clubs in the Championship on the edge of financial collapse and only those with the parachute payments arent spending over 100% of their total income on wages alone!
On the positive front: Matt Clarke is back in training and Carrick is clear his staff will help him "Manage" his recovery. Its too early for a return to the first team, but hes shown a lot of determination and has dug deep to recover. Smudge Smith is also on the road to recovery.
Before the International Break, players like Engel and Latte Lath were thrown in at the deep end. There are the two loanees who may also get their chance soon - having been here for such a short period. We have yet to see the best of them and the squad as a team:
Its irrespective of whats gone....the boys are in a good place and training well. Its not the be - all and end - all of how the season starts or whats gone on behind. Its just...carry on how we go and keep improving, keep pushing, keep working hard and believe in the things we`re doing. [It]....will work for us. [Carrick]
There`s lots of "white noise" out there in the media, in newspapers, on the radio and even on certain Football Forums. But, no matter what, we all want success and that first win to come. We are dug in for a long season. There`s over another 40+ games to play, with lots of twists and turns along the way. We know all the cliches - after all, we support the Boro. Dont forget the Cup too. We`ve sold out at Bradford - just like we sell out every away game we play. There`s the FA Cup waiting round the corner......
Carrick finished with a massive acknowledgement of our fabulous support for the team - even in the tough times. We`ve heard it from previous Managers, but from Carrick - whose been at the top in football he really knows what it means:
[Big smile] It certainly helps us – to have support in numbers. I`ve said it many times and I`l never get tired of saying how good our support is. Away from home…..travelling in numbers and selling out the allocation week in, week out….midweek, week-ends, [isnt] something we take for granted at all. I wouldnt say we go into the game desperate, but we`re certainly really keen to give the supporters that result….[to] send them on the road home happy and make it worth the journey worthwhile….they deserve it.
Feet on the floor, heart on our sleeves, belief in the lads, in full voice at every game.
Come on!
Up The Mighty Boro!
