EFL Championship. Ipswich v Middlesbrough. Portman Road. Saturday 13th April 2024. KO: 15:00 hrs.

Whilst composing this article, Leicester City, who have been at the top of the Championship nearly the whole season, have lost to Plymouth Argyle at Home Park. The Foxes remain joint top [88 points], with the Tractor Boys of Ipswich, whom we confront today [Saturday]. They have a smaller goal difference [+32] compared to Leicester [+41], add to the mix that 3rd place Leeds are only a point behind both the top two. Ipswich have drawn ten and lost six of their 42 games so far this season.

[Ipswich missed out on going top of the Championship when held last time out to a 0-0 draw against Watford]

Since the beginning of March, Ipswich have Won 5 [Plymouth / Bristol City / Sheffield Wednesday / Blackburn / Southampton], Drawn 1 [Watford] and lost 2 [Norwich / Cardiff]. They've thrashed Sheffield Wednesday 6-0, but their other victories have mostly been by the odd goal, having also conceded. On Wednesday night, they drew a blank against Watford at Portman Road, having been beaten by fierce rivals Norwich City only four days before. At the start of April, they beat Southampton 3-2 with a goal on the 97th minute! So they are not invincible by any means.

[Latte Lath is showing true class and becoming a real threat. Next season, he will have a great opportunity to cement his place as first choice striker].

Michael Carrick was "happy" with the performance against Hull, even if the result wasn't what either club wanted. It was a match characterised by errors, which gave Tigers the lead, after a superb initial opener from "Manny" Latte Lath in the early stages of the game. Hull had been around the top six for a long time, but have struggled to keep up the form and consistency and dropped below their best. Nevertheless, it was an exciting game, and really, truth be told, we had enough chances to wrap up all three points.

[Finn Azaz deserves credit for a job well done ta the MKM Stadium]

Ipswich, have been on fire almost the whole campaign and Kieran McKenna must be top of the pile for Championship Manager of the Season. Ipswich, have spent four years in the old Division Three [EFL 1], finishing mid-table, apart from promotion season last year. They haven't spent heavily, but relied on loan players and built a strong team, with many players from the lower leagues, including Oxford United, Bristol Rovers and Peterborough United. But we shouldn't give them too much respect. They are beatable. We have the players and the skills to match theirs. If anything, we need to up our tempo, compared to the Hull game, which will make all the difference.

[Norwich inflicted a critical defeat on Ipswich and increased their lead to sixth place for the teams behind them].

They are not there to be admired, but for us to play our best game and take them on to win it. Back in December, the Tractor Boys 2-0 victory at The Riverside was their third win on the trot and our third defeat in four. How things change. We both stand neck-and-neck in the form table, with us unbeaten in eight games [18/24] whilst Ipswich are second [16/24]. Even though it's a slim chance, we still have a chance of being in the play-offs, but we may have run out of games. Our season remains alive, and we have four of the most important games of the season ahead of us. We can have a big say in what happens in the automatic promotion places, starting today and next up to Leeds at The Riverside.

It's been pleasing to see Latte Lath hit double figures for the season, boding well for next season. He offers us that opportunity up front, to get behind defenders, take them on and create what Carrick called "chaos" for opposing teams. He appears to have settled in. It will be interesting to see how we build the team to provide him with the ball and finish off some of those many chances we have missed this campaign. His future looks bright for us and some have suggested we may have found a twenty-goal-a-season-man for next season!

[Matt Clarke and Luke Ayling have put in some solid performances in recent games, showing that experience has a big part to play in any squad].

Matt Clarke too deserves credit for a superb comeback after long injury. He literally gets his head in the way and has done more than put a shift in, in recent games. Perhaps the same can be said for veteran Luke Ayling, who knows all the tricks in the game to unsettle opposing players and do what is required. Let's hope we can gather all our strengths for the remaining four games and start today with the three points. It doesn't matter whose out injured, because we play with what we've got and do our best. As Carrick says, we can only control what's in our control. Let's keep this momentum of eight games without defeat going and push us over the line.

We can do this.

Come On Boro !

Kieran McKenna

By Mikey Hale

Kieran McKenna hopes Town can bring the positives from the first half performance against Watford into Saturday’s clash against what he expects to be an attacking Middlesbrough outfit.

The Blues largely dominated the first half against the Hornets on Wednesday night, hitting the post amongst a series of big chances created in an entertaining opening period.

Ahead of Boro’s visit to a sold out Portman Road, Town’s boss highlighted what will be required from his side both in and out of possession in order to return to winning ways.

"The first half performance was a big positive and a big sign of where the group is at," he told Town TV.

"We played bravely, we played on the front foot, we dominated the game, and we created chances, and that’s everything that we want to do.

"Of course, if we get those phases of the game tomorrow, whether it’s in the first half or the second half, we need to be clinical and get that little bit of luck that you need sometimes to turn that into a goal.

"We want to defend well, too. Clean sheets at this stage of the season are important. Middlesbrough are a good attacking side, I’m pretty sure they’re going to play a much more attacking style than what Watford did, and they’re going to try and score goals.

"We know we’re going to have to defend well and work really hard without the ball, and we’re going to have to try and maintain that over the 90 minutes as much as we can.

"It’s going to be a really exciting game with two good teams, two teams with a lot of similarities, so we know we’re going to have to perform very well. They’re certainly one of the best footballing sides in the division, there’s no doubt about that. I expect a really good game.”

Connor Chaplin - Ipswich, Top Scorer:

[13 goals and 7 Assists to his tally this season].

1712958359708.png
[Chaplin was on target at The Riverside back in December]

The 27-year-old, began his career at Portsmouth Academy in 2003. He's played for Coventry on loan and as a permanent signing. He signed for Barnsley in July 2019 on a four-year contract, but left and signed for the East Anglian club in 2021 for a fee thought to be reportedly £750,000’s ! So far, he has made 128 appearances and scored 48 goals. A dangerous opponent in any league. One definitely not allowed to get away from his marker today.

Chaplin is the top scorer with 13 goals and 7 assists, but the forward line and midfielders are key to scoring crucial goals and providing assist throughout the team. George Hirst [6+7], Omari Hutchinson [8+5], Nathan Broadhead [13+3] - a dangerous player scored as many times as Chaplin with the two being interchangeable. Together they can be like a steam-train.

1712959511068.png1712958833445.png
Keiffer Moore is on loan from Bournemouth scored 6 goals and provided 1 assist so far. Jack Taylor is a central midfield, who signed last summer from Peterborough United. As well as those pictured above, there are players such as Ali Al-Mahadi, signed from Wimbledon, who so far hasn't been in the starting line up for Town, but made six appearances as sub and scored four goals. Ex-Boro Sam Morsy is a terrier in the mid-field and managed three goals and five assists. So far, 23 [Twenty Three!] players have scored in this league campaign !

Probably like most, I want us to beat Ipswich, or at least get a draw. I'd rather see Leeds and Leicester (and Southampton) go back up to the bottom of the Prem
I hope, and think, next year will be a year when we really could go up and would be easier without the parachute, moneyed teams - but much will depend on the comings and goings in the Summer (no sht sherlock).

I love the Championship, it's miles more interesting than the Prem, but we do have to have a goal to aim for

Kevin Beattie

1712961149294.png
Born in Carlisle, Kevin Beattie signed youth forms with Ipswich and spent nine years as a senior pro at Portman Road, where he became an icon. There is a statue outside Portman Road, to commemorate the centre half, who made 228 appearances and scored 24 goals.
1712962329351.png
His first Manager was the legendry Sir Bobby Robson, and gained nine England Caps. With Ipswich, he won the FA Cup, the UEFA Cup and the Texaco Cup. He was a skilful footballer, who played alongside the likes of Paul Mariner, Kevin Keegan, Malcolm Macdonald and against Michel Platini in the UEFA Cup.
1712962432484.png
He memorably appeared in the 1981 film "Escape To Victory" alongside Bobby Moore, Pele, Russell Osman and Osvaldo Ardiles, amongst others. He joined the Boro in 1982, but only made four appearances, having experienced a serious groin injury. He passed away in 2018, aged 64.

Morning. What's the thoughts of the Hertfordshire / Bedfordshire branch this morning?

One of my worst memories of following the Boro.

Just before new year, can’t remember the year (late 80s early 90s). Got the supporters bus down and went to the pub in the corner of the car park, the white horse?

Had a couple of pints and then went and watched us get mullered by dalian Atkinson, he was in fire.

Long long journey back

I can tell you I don't think we'll get beat today. Not sure we have quite enough to win this game and feel that with any confidence.

What I will say is 4.5 on betfair for a Boro win is way too high. That's 7/2 for the dinosaurs and I have had a nibble of that with a view to trading out if we go ahead.

And good morning roofie.

Some thoughts from Ipswich Supporters Forum:

" First up it's Middlesbrough at Portman Road Saturday, again tough on paper, to get a win here would see us maintain our top Two standing and send us into a very welcome and much needed Two week break while others have to slog it out again next week. I think we may just edge this One against an improving Boro team who know only a win will do, that will definitely suit us more than a team who sits in and defends so it's a narrow Town win for me and the unthinkable dream still very much alive. You're right, we would love to get promoted, but the Championship has something about it which is unpredictable: It's not like the Premiership where "six" clubs dominate [or is it four] and the whole season becomes focused on whether they beat each other. With VAR turning games into grid-iron "football", with more stops than starts, foreign states owning clubs and clubs charging ludicrous prices, I'm not sure fans really want to be there. Personally, I prefer a good Cup run and the battle for promotion, if only to pay off any debts.
