* The Unofficial "Official" Boro v Ipswich [04/24] Match-Day thread *

The horrific start to the season after we had practically a team of strangers getting used to each other cost us the autos.
The injury crisis cost us the playoffs.

There's also an argument that some of the strangers aren't good enough for a promotion chasing team too. If we go into next season with Barlaser, Silvera & Engel as starters we won't fare much better.

He’s just like Tav some don’t notice what he brings to the team until they are gone.
Jones adds loads to the team in terms of being an out ball, committing defenders, getting us up the pitch and tracking back. Lots of people don’t see this.

Sadly he’s not at the level he was 2 years ago in terms of the headline making contributions. 1 on 1 he used to be able to beat his man. Now he usually doesn’t try, and ends up kicking it straight into the defender. His crossing and shooting are way worse than they used to be.

Still a starter for me. I genuinely believe there’s a tremendous player in there somewhere. A bit of targeted 1 on 1 coaching and I think it would all come back to him.

Still don't understand how the lino didn't see this
insane, not even debatable, prime Greenwood position too

Engel might be just about ok, he'll always have a horror game in him 3 or 4 times a season though. Barlaser, I'd sell him. Silvera loan or last resort sub

Nothing too wrong with Engel today. He'd be ok as back up IMO.

I'm thinking the most likely culprit is the horrific start to the season. We had it all to do since then.
Yeah it's been a combination of some poor decision making from Carrick at times and an injury crisis which has cost us.

Hopefully Carrick will learn from his mistakes and we won't have as many injuries next season, meaning we'll improve on this season.

Just need to look at how we played during his last period out injured vs now. The counters are much more dangerous and teams aren't able to go as aggressive against us as a result.

Good result but it all but ends our chances of getting into the top 6.

(Yeah I know a lot of fans were saying it was over after the Hull game but I was hoping Norwich would have lost today to give us a glimmer of hope).

Just such a shame Lath picked up that injury because if he hadn't we'd comfortably be in the playoff places now.
Yes, some people have egg on their faces while chowing down on humble pie for claiming he was a dud. He's been superb again today. His goal record (12 in 20 starts) is pretty much as good as Archers (11 in 17), but he's much better at hold up play and starting the press. He's another that I think we might get offers for in the summer, but we will turn them down. Another 12 months at this rate and there will be serious prem interest in him.

If we get him the support in the 3 behind, then he'll fire us to the prem league. He could easily get 25+ next year.

Hope we keep him, I imagine there will be some interest now.

Wouldn’t surprise me if a relegated team put a bid in for Lath (or from abroad) a blind man on a galloping horse can see the lad has goals in him.

Oh, some of them certainly aren't.

Of the 3 you've mentioned; Engel isn't perfect, but I'd say he's decent enough for a promotion chasing side mind. Works his socks off, creates a fair bit, makes some important blocks too. It doesn't help him that he doesn't have anyone who offers any protection in front of him (Yes you, Silvera and Greenwood!)

Barlaser is good enough for a place on the bench, but too hot and cold for a place in the starting line-up IMHO, need a CDM in the summer, especially with Howson aging more next season.

Silvera I'd fully agree isn't good enough. Has the odd decent moment, but is $hite for most games.

Despite 2 out of these 3 not being good enough for the starting lineup next season, it's still likely we'd have had a playoff place this season without the injury crisis. It's most probably in the 3 months or so that we were severely weakened we'd have picked up another 8 or 9 points and been currently sat between Norwich and West Brom, which in the form we're in would have gave us a very good chance.

I remember predicting that he'd finish the season strongly after returning from injury and the suggestion was dismissed by a few posters.

He'd scored 3 goals in 4 games before picking up the injury, so it was obvious he was beginning to find his feet.

You always surprise me mart with your opinion on engel.

He is easily good enough for a team pushing for autos and he will get better yet.

He is, Statistically, always in the top 4 performers match after match.

I genuinely don't understand why people can't see beyond the occasional rick, and there are some, but even that's been a while now.
