there has still not been a single dose of a licensed Western vaccine administered on the continent of Africa

This truly shocking but I guess sadly not surprising.

In late December, the West African nation of Guinea injected 25 of its senior officials with doses of the Russian Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccine. Unshaken by safety concerns, national leaders took to state TV to celebrate.

“We are the guinea pigs,” one said.

Nearly a month later, there has still not been a single dose of a licensed Western vaccine administered on the continent of Africa — even as roughly 60 million doses have been given worldwide.

It’s an everyman for themselves situation at the moment - I heard the term the last couple of days “Vaccine Nationalism” and it’s exactly that at present. I mentioned on a thread the other day that there are no winners until the whole world is vaccinated.

I wish the world was a different place but it really is survival of the strongest at the moment - no country is going to divert the vaccine away from their own citizens to other countries. Sadly I think the best we can hope for is that there is as a concerted effort after our vaccine programme to help these less fortunate countries.

I’m not saying it’s right but just the way of the world sadly.

Hasn't the continent of Africa been the least affected by covid related deaths?

Would make sense to get the vaccine to the countries that have been affected the most first. Same as those countries vaccinating the most at risk first.

Not really that shocking, the UK alone has had more recorded deaths than the entire continent of Africa, despite having 1/18th of the population.
Small wonder we're trying to vaccinate our own population first, a task we're not even close to completing and don't yet have an excess of vaccines for.

The Gates Foundation will be part of the effort to vaccinate the developing world, but it will take a long time.

All this " we have to vaccinate our people first" is absolutely insane. There are no borders on this pandemic. Israel has refused to vaccinate Palestinians on the West Bank. Idiots
We will not be fully safe until everyone in the village has had it

I am 100% certain that the UK will provide vaccines to other countries, when the tide has been stemmed here and when we actually have the vaccines to do so.

Yesterday there were 578 recorded deaths in Africa (out of 1.2 billion people), there were 1,200 in the UK.

I agree TC the UK has already donated to Covax the WHO organisation to spread the vaccines . There has to be a balance between us and them. That's going to be difficult you just have to look at our little disagreement in Europe I have a feeling that is going to be multiplied over the next few months

Almost true except the part in which Israel has committed to vaccinate health workers on the Palestinian front-line. Any more than this is political suicide in a country that is struggling with its ideological identity which is causing a real struggle to elect a purposeful government.

Covax has been atrociously managed. Countries should have committed x amounts of vaccine vials as a percentage of their overall acquisitions to be donated at point of sale. Instead we have monetary donations but a very long queue and some increasingly incompetent manufacturing procedures.

Ah politics. True Tommy it would be political suicide for the Israelis to vaccinate the Palistinians. Instead of ordinary suicide not to.
Because Covid is 19 does it have the vote?

I agree to a degree - but if you had the choice of you and your family being vaccinated or another family - hand on heart what would you do?

Didn't they say they were going to delay does until the see the effects of other countries vaccination roll outs.
I've just read that they were planning on waiting until March but are now bringing it forward to Feb.
I don't actually know why, but it does seem rather strange to me.
