They left so much space behind their back 4 that day. The Stuart Ripley goal was one of my favourites.

Yep,i played against Rips school games and 5 a side. It was obvious he was head n shoulders above the rest of us.

I got the impression having Peter Beagrie in the Sheffield United team was a motivating factor to the Boro players playing that day who had stayed with the Boro in 1986.

One of my favourites. I remember being sat in the east end seats one game, and Rippers did one of his amazing runs. He lost the ball just before crossing it, and sat on his backside looking forlorn.
Obviously the crowd were all on their feet to see him go, and when he was tackled they all sat down. Except for one. A lone voice shouting 'for f**s sake rippers chase back'. And then I realised that I was stood on my own. Rippers looked up at me, shook his head and ran back after the ball. To be honest I was waiting for a right gobfull when he looked at me.
How hard is this managing park

Bernie had been pushed out onto the left to accommodate Rippers and Senior up front after him failing to score for a number of games but when he scored late on the majority of the team ran to congratulate him which was unusual those days.Though he could be decent out on the left he was never happy playing out there and soon returned to his strikers role and finished the season in fine form.Over the years he had his critics about his lack of tackling and heading ability similar to the abuse Downing unfairly got imo but I always regarded him as an intelligent footballer and probably the most natural goalscorer I've seen play for us.

A great player for us was Ripley, one of the best academy lads I’ve seen play for us in fact 👍🏻

Loved that game

I was stood right in the heart of the holgate as I was there with mates ( we normally stood NW corner) and it was rammed and I remember thinking I hope we win but don’t score too many…

but what a game rippers was on fire that day.

I remember this, my first year as a season ticket holder sat up in the North stand (junior ticket £35!!). Memory might be playing tricks - It was quite a grey day but the pitch was very heavily watered, think they even had the sprinklers on at half time too - we did that quite a lot towards the end of that season.

loved that team and era - each and every one of them a hero!

I seem to remember that it came out later that their keeper had been throwing up in the dressing room before the game and was unwell, or have I made this up?!
