Time machine time - You can change 1 Boro moment ...

Replacing Ben Roberts in the 1997 FA Cup final with a keeper who was 3 inches taller. That way he saves Di Matteo's shot after 44 seconds and we have a chance.
Don't need a keeper 3 inches taller. Just need a better more experienced keeper.

I can't remember seeing another goal like it, was straight at him and had no swerve or dip on it. He almost seems to bend his hands out of the way of it.

Harsh on him as young keeper thrust into an FA cup final can't have been easy. But definitely an error rather than just not being tall enough.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Gianluca Festa

Nothing wrong with that goal. It should have been allowed.
Having said that Chesterfields goal should have been allowed.
Emile Heskey goal stopped us lifting a trophy at the old Wembley.
I would have loved that.
But winning in Cardiff was all the more sweeter because of what we had suffered.
So I would say I regret nothing.
Im proud to be Boro win or lose.
wouldn't change a thing.

Surely there is no other answer but the 3 points debacle. History changing.we were on the verge of possibly emulating or bettering what Chelsea have achieved until that point.

Also going to add appointing Southgate. Gibson had got all his managerial appointments right but this was one step too far. We were at our peak as a club and we hired someone that was completely unsuitable for the job when there must have been good candidates available. It was the start of our demise into a championship team. From UEFA cup final and looking upwards to championship also rans in such a short space of time. Utter disaster.
No, Southgate was fine. Our recruitment was poor. Summer 2008 especially and the banks pulling the plug..

Getsede to get that flippin header in the back of the net at Swansea! We would have stayed up.

Accepting the £6m from Leeds for Gestede when we got relegated..

George Savile went to Millwall from Wolves for £500k Garry Monk could have tripled it and saved us £5.5m Ethan Pinnock went to Barnsley again Garry Monk could have waved his magic envelope and saved us another £5.5m

“On 23 December 2017, it was announced that Monk had left the club, to be replaced by Marco Bielsa three days later”

Appointing Southgate is incredibly harsh imo
Its not a criticism of southgate i just think he was put in a very very difficult position and even at the time it was clear it wasnt the right move for a club that had just been in the uefa final - it was a backwards step

we had to take a backwards step financially

Thats understood and its all easy for me to say but appointing gareth was a false economy - a rookie manager and expecting him to have the savvy to cut costs. It was unfair and ultimately a failing of the club hierarchy

The only answer to this is 'Turn up at Blackburn'.

My first thought too. I'm tempted to say the Heskey goal though; I do think that may have improved what happened in the rest of that season, at any rate we'd have played one less 120 minute match, and of course, we'd have had a cup in the cabinet.

Before my time, but I seem to recall Jack Charlton say in his latter years that we would have been champions if he hadn't gone to manage Newcastle. I don't know if that's true or not: I leave it for those who watched that era. However, from what I know of the team then, and him as a man, it was probably more than a piece of Allerdyce-esque braggadocio

12th in the premier league
13th in the premier league
19th relegated by 3 points with our worst summer transfer and the banks pulling the plug leaving us with no midfield. if the bank doesn’t pull the plug then we don’t get relegated.

The season after that.. if we stick with Southgate we go straight back up. It’s amazing that no one has the appointment of Strachan as one of the most destructive moments of our club’s history.. we’re still feeling that right now. We took a generational blow with that appointment.. horrific.

I’ve thought about the three points debacle, the missed chances in cups.. the very nearlys!

But who knows what was around the corner? Many successful clubs have gone to the wall after a period of success or simply dropped like a stone into oblivion. If we win a cup in 97 do we win one later on? Do we make a European Final.. or do we make like Newcastle and just look very busy winning naff all.. or worse still end up like Sunderland in the twilight zone (Mowbray to the rescue once again)

For me the biggest moment is the appointment of Strachan.. an absolute stain.

Folks mentioning Southgate are our of their effing minds!
