Time machine time - You can change 1 Boro moment ...

The season after that.. if we stick with Southgate we go straight back up.

I don't believe that; there was a chance it could happen, but only a slim chance.

Our league position at the time was false; disguised by 10 points from the first 4 matches, after which we sold our best players.

But who knows what was around the corner? Many successful clubs have gone to the wall after a period of success or simply dropped like a stone into oblivion. If we win a cup in 97 do we win one later on? Do we make a European Final.. or do we make like Newcastle and just look very busy winning naff all.. or worse still end up like Sunderland in the twilight zone (Mowbray to the rescue once again)

If we'd won the league cup in '97, I don't think it would mean that we'd have established ourselves as a PL force for evermore. The good times would have ended; that is inevitable for a club our size. However, I think we could have had a decade of being competitive around the top 6 of the PL, and had another cup and a few more european adventures too.

The appointment of Strachan was far worse than Southgate.. he wasn’t that bad.

I don’t believe that, there was a chance it could happen.. but yadda yadda

1. Strachan - worst decision the club has made in its history.
2. Blackburn - why didn’t we just field a team?
3. Gestede - £6m from Leeds..c’mon
4. Pulis - aweful manager, wasted money, massively underachieved, dreadful football

5. THAT Heskey goal.. I remember it slightly different, I remember Juninho pushing up and waving everyone else forward to try and get us another goal.. that difference gifted Heskey his opportunity. I may have mind melded that experience from a different game and am happy to be corrected. He was not the messiah.. he was a very naughty boy.

Well, sacking Southgate and appointing WGS are two separate issues. It's not like GS was sacked just so they could bring in WGS (Warnock was ditched for Wilder in this way); I think they spent some time choosing the new manager after GS left?

For what it's worth, I agree WGS was the worse of the 2.

I think he was sacked just so they could being in WGS we were in talks much earlier.. idiotic. The last manager I would have been speaking too!

This thread is the one moment.. Southgate isn’t is it. Far from it.

Where does the "we were in talks" come from? Normally when the decision is made, the new appointment is announced simultaneously with the sacking, as it was when Pulis, Warnock and Wilder where apponitmened.

With WGS is took about a week.

I suppose either way, sacking GS didn't mean the club HAD to appoint WGS, so it is 2 separate decisions.

26th September 2009, Keith Lam meets with Gordon Strachan at the Ricoh Arena..
26th October 2009, Gordon Strachan is appointed Middlesbrough manager.

It was decided that day when we drew 2-2 at Coventry.. we were in talks right then.

First thoughts were heskey goal, followed by Ben roberts 😭. The build up to the fa cup was phenomena, banners and parties all over the place and then wallop. 😔. 1-0 down.
However my over riding memory of the league cup was saying why didn’t we play into the corners 😭😭.
heskey goal for me I think as that came first.
