Today at Middlesbrough council..

There’s now no point Labour suggesting any alternative plans in May

That’s it. Chance gone for Labour to influence a vote

I still would like to know if Labours May proposals referred to next year’s budget.

Lodger if you could please clarify?

Yeah, no point in Labour getting more councillors elected in May, so you know, they can control the budgets.

Jesus wept.

I’m still unsure what the motif for not voting was.

Of course those that vote are accountable and they own the vote

But there seemed to be a excitement that a vote would be blocked by Labour (which it wasn’t)

How would that have benefited us who live here?
Agree.

Can somebody also explain to me why 9 members did not turn up.

He was talking about alternatives to the budget which has just been passed and which they could have argued the merits of. They can't do that now.

Chris this thread has nothing to do with a manifesto. Nobody is referring to a manifesto but you

What’s the point of a May proposal from Labour when the vote passed tonight?

I’ve literally made that point 3 times and you still haven’t got it
It's almost like councils aren't elected for a single year and have an entire term to plan for

Hi al sorry I wasn't about to reply.
I'll try my best.

First of all, like national politics, don't believe everything people say in the town hall chamber, most of it is political nonsense.

Many are commenting about the budget and have no idea how the budget process works, not helped by some councillors and the mayor not telling the whole truth.

For the budget to pass it required a majority in favour.

Tonight this was what was known as the "Mayors Budget" thiswas passed and therefor ends the process.

Now for the benefit of those that have commented, if the budget didn't get a majority in favour tonight then a new process would kick in.

This would move the budget to what is called The "Officers Budget"

A meeting was penciled in, for early next month. Officers would then have 10 days to produce a budget that would get passed in the chamber- failing that the government would step in.

Of course we had plans, and our plans would have been to negotiate with councillors of all sides to see what we could agree, the mayor would have zero input in it.

I'm 100% confident that we would have got a budget through with Labour and some Independent Councillors, because if that failed the government would have stepped in and imposed a 5% council tax rise as well as slashing services, we couldn't have allowed that, neither could a good number of Independents.

The mayor then would have to follow the agreed budget by law.

Sorry I couldn't say anything before the vote, but as it was deemed to be very close we had to keep things to ourselves.

Thanks Ian. That'll put right a few on here who think they're experts in the working of the Council.

Half the 1st page of this Forum is now full of political posts. Many other boards have a section for non-football related topics, any reason we can't have the same? At the end of the day its supposed to be a Forum for fans of Middlesbrough football club, not local or national politics.
Oneboro have only football and they get about 15 posts a day on non match days, that would just kill the forum.

Wouldn’t be easier to just not open a thread you have no interest in?

What is your view on the continuous lawlessness and assaults happening round Norfolk Shops by the victims of social deprecation?

The Tories have defacto control of the council, they get first go at a budget due to their Tory Mayor. It's theirs to own now.

Labour had a much greater chance to negotiate an alternative with the opposition when the chips were down, unfortunately this never happened which was always the risk.

Now Labour can focus on the May elections to make sure they don't require the aid of any opposition for the next 4 years.

The majority attacking Labour for the problems caused by Tory ideology need to focus on those who are causing the deprivation of our town, the Tories.

What our esteemed Mayor is doing is simple smoke and mirrors, blaming Labour for his mess and many are falling for it.

So why did so many abstain? I thought the risk of voting against it was that the government would then step in. A rock and a hard place it was called.
I didn't realise there would be another "chance" before that. If you are certain a better budget would have gone through at that stage why wasn't the mayor's budget rejected?

But they won't Chris. They'd much rather attack everything and anything Labour just for the sake of it. In their minds attacking the Tories might look like tacit approval of Labour and they'll never have that.

That seems to be too difficult for some people. And you're right about Oneboro. It's like a graveyard on there most of the time. I can't even post on there anyway because they banned me for supporting newyddion on here.

Actually you’ve told me nothing their I don’t already know

You’ve got quite a low opinion of people’s knowledge and understanding

The reason you have been asked about the process is because you’ve admitted that tonight’s budget would likely have received government approval after 10 days

Which again leaves us asking what are Labours plans and why would you put a counter proposal forward in May when the vote was tonight?

Or are the May alternative proposals not alternative proposals and are in fact next year’s Labours proposals
Sorry that post doesn't make any sense to me, so are unable to reply.

It seems like politics is the same everywhere though.
Each side criticise every single thing the other does. Never acknowledging a good decision or idea. If they come anywhere near doing that it is always followed by 'it doesn't go far enough', 'too little too late' or something like that.

I don't see anyone attacking Labour... I see genuine people asking a simple question of our resident Labour Councillor. Something he has so far failed to answer.
